was the air cold or cool before when it was working?

get a set of vacuum gauges and hook it up, see how much pressure is on the high side and low side of the system

hopefully, you just need a recharge of the freon; that's what's worked for me in the past.

^^yea but if he needs a recharge chances are there is a leak in the system b/c refrigerant leaks minimally through time. and in 5 years it shouldnt leak out to the point that the compressor isnt turning on and the a/c isnt recirculating (thats if he has a 05 tc)
if u bring it to a shop get them to recharge the system and put dye in it. this way they can find the source of the leak with a UV light or leak detector. (that is if the lack of refrigerant is the problem)

The leak check is easy to do yourself with the kits they sell at auto parts stores. If you are familiar with pressurized systems then it shouldn't be hard to detect where and if there is a leak. Putting in more R134a will temporarily resolve the issue so you won't sweat your ***** off in the meantime.
