I just want to point out that you don't need a fancy SLR to take fancy pictures. The cameras only a tool.
I really wouldnt mind hearing what you have to say, in fact i would like to hear it. Sorry havnt responded, been real busy. but i think i changed my mind from the d40 to the rebel XT, because the auto focus and stuff. also the 8mp rather than 6. mo = betta <<<my philosophy teacher taught me that.

perhaps the only thing missing it the build/durable body and its an L lens.. it does take sharp and nice shots, with IS too..

not always... thats why i picked the XT over the XTi. the xti has more mp but its on the same size sensor, thus bringing more noise the the images. still a great cam though. lol. but i still picked my xt over an xti

yah, thats just what my teacher said but he.. well.. is a philosophy teacher so.. i dono. But i really think ive decided on the XT, can get at cosco, with the body, the 18-55mm lense and a 2gb card for 499. reasons ive decided the xt rather then the d40,
1. 8mp vs 6mp
2. auto focusing body
3. the guy at kits told me that for speed photos (car racing and motorcycle racing) the canon lenses are better
4. 3fps vs 2.5fps (not that this really matters to me just a fact)

good choice, though cant go wrong between nikon and canon.. and yeah mp dont really matter much unless you do cropping and printing very large image.. with that price you want, xt is your best bet!

yah, only problem, kits/ritz has the insurance, so anything short of fire or theft is covered and a replacement or fix will be issued. cosco doesnt have that

clean shots dubber.

tc2.. see if you can get just the body and then spend a little bit extra and buy another lens instead of the kit.

i.e. the 18-55iS... its not a huge jump, but its noticeably better than the kit lens and has IS for less than 200. :D

So did you pick up a camera yet?

I just picked up a new point and shoot for the wife. I normally only buy canon because that is all I use but I found this Olympis that is "wife" proof. It is freeze proof/waterproof/dust proof/drop proof... and a few other things. I will have to post a review on it after she gets it on her b-day.

This post needs to stay alive!

here is a link to the camera:
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4217038

JR price matched it from B&H. and if you are wondering why I didn't go with B&H in the first place, its because JR has free shipping and no tax!

Nikon FTW (not because I work there, but because they make an amazing camera for the money)

The D40, new with a lens (18-55mm), is now $499. Refurbished kits can be had for $399.

If you can spend a little extra I would recommend getting another lens with it, but it all depends on your intentions.

I only have an 18-55mm =(. I need a better lens, but I have no money for it since I'm buying a turbo and I just blew 400 on a failstation3.
