Default PROBLEM: Hatch shocks gave out

The shocks on the hatch just gave out a week or so ago on my tC. I looked up the price for replacements, and directly from toytoa they are ONE HUNDRED BUCKS EACH. Doesn't that sound like a total ripoff for crap that doesn't even last a year? Are there any alternatives I can use... cheaper hopefully... PLEASE? My job requires me to open that trunk a lot and it's pretty hard without the aid of the shocks... I am not under warranty... any advice... PLEASE!!!
