But whether it's worse than 80 mph depends on how much "stop" and how much "go" you do.
I'm getting horrible mpg on the freeways... keeping with traffic, I do about 80 but my rpm's are so damn high compaired to my other cars. Fifth gear at 80mph, my tach is up at about 3700rpm! The more freeway driving I do, the worse my mpg are. I fill up at about a quarter tank which gets me 210-230 miles!
EPA estimates are based on Legal speed limits and are not considered valid in real world driving. If you're going 80+ freeway driving, you will get considerably less mpg's than if traveling at legal limit of 65mph. AND city driving EPA estimates are considerably better than real world stop and go--lead foot--A/C always on mpg's. If real-world driving habits were incorporated into EPA testing procedures, we would see a 25% or more reduction in mpg's across the board.
I average about 26mpg combined that's with the a/c always on and brisk take-offs at the light and 75-80+ on the highway...of course, I commute on the Los angeles freeway/parking lot and I also have an automatic, thank god...

Not that this really matters anyway - it's a fact that speeding significantly reduces your gas mileage, and neither Toyota nor the EPA will give ever a damn about it.
