Does anyone know if stop and go freeway traffic makes for worse gas milage then say 80 mph on the freeway? My commute has both and I get about 22mpg with an A/T.

Well, anytime you have to run the engine without moving, it will make your mileage much worse.

But whether it's worse than 80 mph depends on how much "stop" and how much "go" you do.

I'm getting horrible mpg on the freeways... keeping with traffic, I do about 80 but my rpm's are so damn high compaired to my other cars. Fifth gear at 80mph, my tach is up at about 3700rpm! The more freeway driving I do, the worse my mpg are. I fill up at about a quarter tank which gets me 210-230 miles!

EPA estimates are based on Legal speed limits and are not considered valid in real world driving. If you're going 80+ freeway driving, you will get considerably less mpg's than if traveling at legal limit of 65mph. AND city driving EPA estimates are considerably better than real world stop and go--lead foot--A/C always on mpg's. If real-world driving habits were incorporated into EPA testing procedures, we would see a 25% or more reduction in mpg's across the board.

I average about 26mpg combined that's with the a/c always on and brisk take-offs at the light and 75-80+ on the highway...of course, I commute on the Los angeles freeway/parking lot and I also have an automatic, thank god...

I live in Seattle now but moved recently from San Diego - people don't all drive 80 - they drive 85. Pretty much all of them. All the time that they can.

I'd probably believe that if I didn't actually spend a reasonable amount of time driving down there myself.

Not that this really matters anyway - it's a fact that speeding significantly reduces your gas mileage, and neither Toyota nor the EPA will give ever a damn about it.

I drove mine from San Diego to Tucson in late August. That was awesome... tc and my friend's 330 on those straight roads.

Had to keep it down, though. There are a ton of cops when you get to the 10.

It must have been a "enigine break-in" issue, because I just got back from NorCal with my cruise locked on 85 almost the entire way and I was getting roughly 27mpg :?

For a tC & at a speed of 85mph that aint bad. Thats about what I get in my corsica at those speeds. I cant recall the exact numbers but its like every 10miles over 65mph you kill your gas milage by? I think 5% or more. So at 85mph you would have something like 10% less gas milage.
