how about we all get Manual and not worry about this?
That would solve all the world's problems...

Wait, why would you need to engine brake? It's a gas guzzling way to slowing your car. Brakes are there for that reason.

For snow???

Brakes slow you down alot more efficiently and controllably then engine braking, infact engine breaking could upset the car's balance if you do it wrong (which is most likely since you don't practice shifting auto trannies everyday) and cause you to lose control.

Stick to the brakes and ABS please.

Engine braking doesn't use gas, it's the force of the engine turning without load that causes the braking. If it was sucking gas, it would be creating power and not braking.

Who else here has been driving for 25 years averaging 20-30K miles a year?

<raises hand...

There's no replacement for experience...

auto shifting in a drag is useless... if you punch it, the rpms go to redline...

Engine braking takes a lot of the load of torque-transferral off the brakes during deceleration, mostly for slowing down on a steep downgrade. It locks out the O/D to help in transferring the power away from the wheels to slow down with less wear on the brakes. IMO though, I'd much rather replace the brakepads on my tC rather than fix the transmission.... but hey, if you're still under powertrain warranty then have at it chief.

In snow and ice, yeah, ABS is a lifesaver.

Low gears give you more engine power at lower speeds, such as coming off the line or towing or going uphill (especially uphill while towing, since the slugging of the engine can do hell on your engine).

Did I miss anything?

I drop my car into 2nd when coming off an overpass and going into another freeway. It's better than riding the brakes the whole way down and a lot safer too imo.

I dislike engine braking. It just "seems" hard on the clutch. I shudder everytime I have to make a sharp right-hand turn and downshift to second and feel the car gyrate--but you can't be riding the clutch midturn.

Before my TC, I use to shift my auto Neon all the time. Yes, in the long run... it'll ____ up your transmission. When my neon hit around 80k miles, I had to replace the whole transmission... everything fell apart. FYI, I downshift ALOT with that car... now with this TC, I avoid doing it... I aint tryin to pay 4 geez again to fix my transmission...

But did it fall apart from the shifting or because it was a Neon?

Heres why i have auto (a sad, sad story.)
Went to Grossinger and planned on my parents buying me a car. Im only 16 I dont have a job, just good grades, which in turn got my parents to buy me a car. I chose the tC because of its value and it had pretty much everything i wanted. At the dealer the guy asked, "what transmission do you plan on driving" and i said stick, then he was like "is this your first car?" I had to say yes cuz my dad was beside me. I said "yea" he was like "well if this is your first car you shouldn't get stick."

my jaw dropped. i felt like pounding on the guy. My dad always believes what the dealer says.

in the end i got auto but at a different dealer (hahaha) that retard ruined my life. At least i had a car right after my birthday, and very fortunate among my friends.

Yea i drive my car in L, 2 and 3 gears, i bounced redline (due to the rev limiter) on accident once in L gear, cuz i downshifted on some guy. Yea i only put 900 miles on my car so far but i havnt had trouble yet, and i agree with everyone that says its ok to shift like that as long as you dont be a retard and redline it like me LOL shouldnt have done that during break in period. Ive floored it at least 50 times (not from a stop)

Ill be waiting for this shifting kit nonsense you talk about.

If it was bad for the tranny, don't you think Toyota would've put a little warning sticker next to the shifter or a note about it in the manual, instead of expalining HOW to do it...

i dont c how an AT ruins ur life. I mean honestly can u drive a stick? I drove a beater when I was 16. Drove it around for a year then got a MT Z and now im back to a AT. Ask people around here on this forums what they drove when they were 16 you will be shocked.

your talking about tiptronic, its like that but an AT shifting kit allows u to shift faster than a MT. The downside is an AT tC only have 4 speeds.

I don't see the sad part in your sad, sad story. Its not a big deal if your have an automatic. I'm 21 and chose the auto over the manual for specific reasons. Your 16, and have a BRAND spanking new car. Be fortunate of that. : )

Exactly, this might be an automobile revelation. As for those low to high gears, you aren't supposed to be shifting those during driving. You are supposed to stop and switch them. The automatic transmission isn't built like a manual and is not supposed to be abused like that. Why would you want to switch them anyways? If you like to switch gears, get a manual.
And here I thought it was a simple matter of knowing how much throttle to apply at what RPM, instead of just leadfooting it all the way through.
