shifting an automatic
Look,
I wanted to drop my $0.02
I keep it in "3" and put the pedal through the floor!! The engine responds nicely to the K&N Intake I have installed. Just wait for an aftermarket tranny with the slap stick!!!

Sorry to bring up old topics, but this one was definately bothering me.. especially since my good friend was making fun of me shifting my AT tC.
I by no means know much about engines, but I dare to say, if you want to shift an AT for racing, the only useful shift really.. is getting out of O/D (into 3rd) to speed up, let's say on a highway. For proof of that, I did some runs on an empty road of my car doing 0-60 and 60-80mph:
(0-60mph)
1st run-shifted manually from L: 10.3 secs
2nd run-letting the car shift: 9.9 secs
(0-80mph)
3rd run-downshifting to 2nd: 9.6secs
This was entirely out of boredom, my car is stock and i had my friend in the car with me. Just sayin that shifting from L won't help you much (if at all) at least in my cases.

also the fact that people dont understand that taking your foot off the gas will decrease your speed. everyone goes from gas to slam on brakes brake, gas to slam on brakes what a bunch of retards...

While everybody's trying to rip eachother's heads off over this subject, check out the feature article on Scion Life: Drag Racing the Scion. The author raced a Scion automatic...considered shifting, etc. Read the article...

And lets remember this is a Mesage Board, not a boxing ring, huh?

Darh, I forgot about this post. I was goin to follow up about my times. I don't know if my friend being in the car matters, but the stereo was blasting also and I was using up the electricals way too much. I can't say I'm happy with those numbers, but I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to getting fast 0-60. I assume slamming on the pedal isn't the best way, but that's how I did it.
Also, I've heard of it being done to other cars, converting from auto to standard tranny. Now, I've always thought I'd never do something like this because it wouldn't be the exact same as buying a standard right? Any input on this please, and am I assuming the wrong stuff?

i found it better to slowly push the pedal while the car is shifting rather then just flooring it. My car really jumps when going to 2 from 3rd. I guess its from the cat-back exhaust also.
I find that just flooring it doesn't work as well. What I do is stomp the pedal down considerably to start with, then end up around 3/4s of the pedal down and as the rpms increase, continue to give it more throttle . If you give this steady extra push as it nearing the high RPMs, it will keep the tranny from shifting sooner. The auto tranny is looking for that point where it is moving the car fast enough to be able to shift and keep pulling in the next gear. If you make it feel like it hasn't reached that point, it will keep increasing the RPMs before it shifts.

There's no need to let off the gas. You don't get clutch disconnect with an auto. Also, it's an ECT, electronically controlled transmission. You're not mechanically shifting when you move that lever, just telling the tranny it's OK to shift now, if it's ready...
