So that's how they keep the price down...

I'll need to make sure I get ten or fifteen coats of wax on there before winter...

Also, to the others, don't you think Toyota would make this car well built since it is the car that is supposed to get people in to a Toyota when they're older?? I have full faith in my tC.

The thin paint (might be the same paint as Lexus/Toyota but with half as many coats), notchy seat rails and lower quality interior materials are how they—and you—saved money.
the tC is a great deal at $17k. i hate to say that they skimped on the paint to keep the price down, but i think thats the case. compare it to a new corolla. corollas have decent toyota paint jobs, better than scions, but to get a corolla to match what a tC has, you'd need to buy an XRS, which is $19K+. i was going to buy an XRS, but the tC really impressed me.
my tC has orange peal, much much more than my 97 corolla had. my tC has a very thin and soft clearcoat. my tC has a good amount of swirls, despite my best efforts at washing and drying properly. i've learned to accept it. i keep it waxed and it shines bright. thats what keeps me happy.
if you are making your body panels flex under the weight of your buffing, your doing it much too hard. go lightly, it comes off a little slower, but you doing your clearcoat and your elbow a favor.

People need to stop complaining about how little things like this make the tC a "bad" car... this is the first generation car with just about 2 years in production... what do you want? a perfect car? please... take a look at every other first year production cars... are they perfect? NO!
And like stated above, you get what you paid for.. (and in my opinion, I paid a lot less than what I got) so I'm really happy w/ my car even if my first gear is giving me problems or that the hatch rattles (by the way, the hatch isn't the problem, the sound I have comes from the panel that is right between the moon roof and the hatch). These are things that can be fixed!

Anyway, I'm more concerned about years 6-10. I'm confident I can keep the tC looking pretty good for the first five years, but I'd like to get a lot more out of it than that. (If in a few years it's starting to look iffy, I can always take it somewhere and have a thicker clearcoat applied.)
But all that said, I do have to reiterate that I'm very happy with the car. It's a damn nice ride, and I agree, for the price it's a great value.

So far everyone's saying that these creaks and rattles can be fixed, yet we're all still dealing with them and there's no definitive cause or fix for any of them yet. Hell, I've done all but stuff my dashboard with carpet padding to get rid of the squeak in my center stack and guess what... it's still there.
That said, I don't necessarily think the tC is a bad car (hell I do love mine) but I can see that Scion's choice not to address these issues directly will push buyers elsewhere. It's that simple.
I have to say, my silver paint looks pretty good. I know the seats are really cheap, they are very hard to adjust smoothly. The drive train seems pretty good so far, but sometimes the engine idles a little roughly. I only have 1500 miles on mine, but have noticed the suspension loosening up a little...it really gets unsettled on some turns on some roads. I am wondering if a upgrade will help this. So far , very few rattles. We'll just have to see.....
I see everyone talking cheep and flimsy, did anyone really look at the cars to see where the real money is saved? Toyota only makes 4 diffrent versions of any given model of Scion With and Without side air bags, and With and without Automatic trans. There are no other factory options, The key to efficient production and cutting price is to offer as few options as possable so you get the most value from tooling, and best value per worker hour.
(Stupid MBA again, I really shouldn't have gotten that thing)
