Default Speed mph *recorder* help

Well, a friend of mine got a ticket last night when he I saw him and I know he wasnt speeding, but hey, were 17 and we cant win the fight in the court, so hes screwed. My dad found this thing that will record your speed (which I like) but it also has a GPS to show where the car is at all times. Now Im not a bad kid or anything, but there are times I end up going somewhere else etc, and its sorta an invasion of privacy thing. Its like you can never do ANYTHING without your parents knowing... Im sure all the parents out there are loving this, but Im not such a big fan of it.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a systtem that can be put on the car, that records speeds for the simple fact of being able to dispute speeding tickets, nothing more, no GPS, no nothing. If you do please let me know, these speed recorders get as much as 30% off your insurance bill, so Id really like to get one!

Thanks!

i really don't think the payoff of having one would be worth the price of getting it installed. Most of the time when you get a speeding ticket you were speeding in some sense. Atleast in my experiance i've had 7-8 tickets in my lifetime. All but maybe 2 were legit and the cops usually cut me a break. Citing me for going less then i actually was but noting on the ticket that i was actually going faster.

Best thing you can do is fight the ticket and atleast show up to court. Alot of times they'll plea you down right then and there. Sure your paying a fine but i'd rather pay 100 with no points then 160 and 3 points

Mabey it's just me, but your first sentance of your post is really hard to understand. Anyways, your solution is very simple. If you dont want you father to know where you are going in your scion ( which im assuming he payed for) then you hand him the keys and go buy your own car.

If you bought your scion on your own ( which at 17 I highly doubt) then you can tell him its none of his business!

- the answer to your post is to find a unit that does not have GPS built in-

yeah, GPS can record your average, top, and instantaneous speed. And you have to track your motion to keep this data. I dont know if it records the time you were going when you were traveling 'x' speed so i dont know how useful this would be in court.

I own a gps and it has a tendency to be inaccurate at times. Only high end GPS are really reliable which is why they prolly dont accept lower model's readouts in court

gps is not useful in court unless you were given a ticket for like 100mph, then you could prove that you didnt hit that high of a speed, however i have had several diffrent gps units and they all tend to be inaccurate at times, example my pioneer said i was traveling 104 mph when i wa sonly going about 68

gps unit data is not admissible as evidence in courts because there is no way to prove what car the gps unit was in at any given time.

I can't add much about the gps,but my advice is get a lawyer and fight it.I have had three speeding tickets pleading down to defective equipment in the last two years.A traffic lawyer will only charge about $125 to fight a speeding ticket.

I don't know of a speed recorder, but I did hear of a pilot program by insurance companies in WA to TRY a speed recording device, but i can't imagine it'd save you from a ticket. The cool part to it is that even if you drive 100 MPH ALL the time your insurance won't go up unless you get ticketed. Also i heard they can be disabled. but if disabled for more than 10% of your driving then your discount is void.

So the short of it is this:
device will get you insurance discount. (if you drive sane)
device won't count against you if you don't drive sane. (or so they say)
you can take your car to the track disable the device, and drag race. Then re-enable it on your way home.
device doesn't have GPS either.

Try calling insurance companies and asking them about it.

30% of your insurance? hahaha, yeah right buddy. i was shopping for a new insurance for months, i called about 10 places, none of them asked about that. also, it's never an option to add to your insurance like a security system.
i smell bs. slow down

xnevergiveinx,
When you call around about insurance they don't look for reasons to give you a discount. I've never heard an insurance agent say "can I give you some money back". You need to be proactive in looking for discounts. Had you asked them about the GPS device you may have found you could have gotten a discount for it.

There are quite a few reasons GPS is not and will never be admissable in court to beat a speeding ticket. If you want to beat a ticket first of all show up and hope the cop doesn't. If the cop does show there are lines of questioning you can use to try to trap him into making a mistake and then move for the case to be dismissed. There are several things that case law has established police must do such as calibrating their equipment before and after a stop. If you can trick the cop into admitting he didn't do this or one of several other things then case dismissed. Also make sure to request a copy, in writing, of the cops notes or log well before the trial. If these aren't provided to you then case dismissed. Another thing is a cop can't simply read off the ticket or his notes when on the witness stand. So ask him things like "What was the color of the car I was driving?" If he says blue and his notes say or the ticket says red then case dismissed. There's more you can try as well. You can find websites outlining how to do all this. I even saw one that gives you an exact script of the questioning you should use.
