you have to leave the box intact because you have the MAF attached to it. what you can do is take out the filter that is inside the box and leaveit open.it wil give you 1 to 2 hp to the wheels,at least in my case it did.

if you rip it out, make sure you don't leave any bits n pieces that could break off and get sucked into the manifold. Technically you're supposed to leave it there, but its no big deal. You do NOT want an open air box though. get a K n filter or trd and you'll be fine.

i think the "box" you're referring to is what we've come to a consensus as being a silencer for the intake system. this makes sense to me, becuz after i've removed it, especially on cold startups, the intake and TB make a lot of noise.

you can remove the silencer box thingy, just unclamp it and pull it out. hold the intake pipe so you don't rip it out. its in there good.

you can plug it with a rubber plumbing cap (1.5 or 2" i forget). I got it at HOME DEPOT in the plumbing section. probably have em at lowes, etc...

i also suggest cutting the "fender extension pipe" from the air box before it starts to bend, making a straight pipe inlet for your air box. It works almost like a velocity stack. I've done pulls w/ the extension piece intact, w/o the piece, and with it cut. And the straight pipe inlet works the best by far. Pulls much nicer in the low/mid range, and nice top end as well.
