Default Stupid question time: Engine sound variance

I have an '06 5-speed, and ever since it started to get cold (around 45 degrees here) I noticed that my engine sound somewhat louder in the morning and at night. I've owned other cars and never noticed this. Maybe because I didn't care about them like I do about my tC, or maybe because they were automatics.

Anyways, is this normal for our cars? I don't mind the sound at all, just want to make sure it's normal. Thanks.

when the car is cold, it seems to idle at a higher rpm, maybe thats what you are hearing?

Yeah, it's normal. Just remember to take it easy while the car's cold.

get an engine damper.... it makes it 10X worse when it's cold. i drove to work the other day when the temp outside was 15 degrees or so, and the damper made so much noise. it was creaking and cracking like crazy all the way to work.

I want to get an engine damper so I can hear/feel the engine better in the cabin. I was just worried about the sudden change in engine sound.

Also, I was doing some research and some people say that they noticed the same thing on other cars after they switched to Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I switch to M1 in early November, so that probably contributed to the extra volume. Maybe the extra lubricity syn oils have doesn't dampen the noise as much as dyno oils.

yes the engine is louder in cold. i'm in michigan, we know cold! I definitely take it easy until it's warmed up. Once it warms up, it is much quieter. its that cold temp idle. Runs richer to warm up quick, and would be louder.
