Default sunroof and the highway

I remember before i got my tc and i was searching posts and saw poeple saying not to have the sunroof open when on the highway or at high speeds. Is this true? At whats speed should i close the roof, or only have it open half way, or whatever. What are the speed and roof opeing i should live by? or should i say drive with. Thanks

"Is this true?"

No.

"At whats speed should i close the roof, or only...."

You can open or close it at any speed you want. The 2/3 way back position is to reduce wind buffeting. You can find out what speeds this works for you by testing it yourself.

I've had mine open on the highway for about an hour several times.. Never had any problems.

It does move around alot however.

Mine flaps in the wind sorta, i have seen it moving in the reflection of trucks and stuff. I also notice my wind guard.....the front peice that pops up.........tends to not stay all the way up at highway speeds. It gets pushed down. If i put my hand up and push it back up against the wind the buffetting is GONE!! Any possibility of stronger springs on that piece??

i think the recommendation to keep it down at highway speeds is just saying that when you're going that fast, even small debris or rocks may be thrown fast enough to smash the glass.

You guys need to read your manual.

You can open it on the highway and be absolutely fine... unless something hits it of course.

What you should not do is drive with it ALL the way open. As you notice there is a 2/3-3/4 position in which it stops first - this is as far as it should be open at highway speed. I rarely open it past this spot anyways. If you're getting a lot of shaking or rattling at high speeds, you're probably opening it all the way...

I thought I read somewhere (in the maual I thought) that the sunroof was only suppossed to be opened at like speeds under 50 mph...oh well I'm wrong. About the wind deflector staying up, I noticed the other day that mine seems kind of weak. I can wiggle mine and such, I mean the thing really works, but it just doesn't want to stay up.

What do you mean weak? You should be able to push the deflector down easily. It should be able to fold itself down as you go faster. The force of the wind should be able to push it down.

Does it bouce if you push it down? Or require VERY little force?

I heard somewhere on mythbusters that driving at highway speeds with the windows down/sunroof open decreases gas mileage. Something about it creates too much drag or resistance against the wind, so it takes more gas to move your car.

But I'm no scientist so...

Windows - yes. Definitely more drag. I'm not sure about a sunroof like ours... there's a wind deflector, which, in theory should keep it aerodynamic. Plus the actual sunroof is angled as well.

Yeah. Wind deflector. Kinda forgot about that lol.

However, it only deflects wind... That means that obviously wind still gets in your car eventually and creates drag, especially when you're traveling at fast speeds. I would think the deflector only decreases the amount of drag, but I would think it still slightly affects the mpg.

Or maybe I'm just making all of this up?

Well either way, it only decreases gas mileage by a very minimal amount. Or so the mythbusters say.

The air is going to flow more smoothly when it is shut. Anything that deflects or changes direction of the air is resistence, which will increase your Drag Coefficient/affect MPG.

i'm pretty sure that it says not to have it open when your going 60 mph+ in the book. i'll have to look tomorrow.

i always close mine on the highway and also when i'm getting on a bumpy road

your right, it does create more drag. Nothing is better than closing everything up. Least amount of drag. But does it decrease it significantly, possible, never tested it. But I don't think it would be too bad. Its all just preference. Isn't this what a convertible is for?

Yes... I know.

What I'm saying is, compared to many other sunroof designs where there's just a big hole in your roof and air flows in and creates a LOT of drag, ours does have some aerodynamics in it to at least lessen that effect. It's obviously better to drive with everything shut... but drag is just slightly less of a concern with our sunroof.

I just shut mine at fast speeds because I don't like wind whipping my hair around into my face. I guess it's all preference.
