Switching Oils?

Switching Oils?
I bought my 08 second hand, with no previous knowledge of the past owners maintenance records. For a while I regularly had it changed with Synthetic oil (0W-20), last year I started getting oil changes done at the stealership with a friend that worked there. The first time I am not sure if they put 5w-20 or 0w-20 in it, the second time I know they put 0w in it because my friend there told me thats what he put in it. The last oil change I got here in Vegas I had to ask them to put synthetic in it.
Its got me wondering, is it bad to change back and forth for the engine? Next oil change I will do it myself for the first time , so I was wondering if it is worth it for synthetic vs conventional. Gonna be swapping in royal purple.
Edit: Royal Purple is synthetic...Damn I need to research more.

Synthetic is a great choice if your doing the changes yourself (less expensive). Remember if you use synthetic you can easily go 4500-5K miles before each change. Changing synthetic every 3K is a waste of money unless MAYBE your turboed.

Use the weight the manufacture recommends which is 5w-20 or 0w-20. A different oil weight maybe be desired (between 5w VS 0w) due to weather conditions i.e you can change to a lower-weight oil for extremely cold weather.
