I know there's not as many out there as Civics, but I thought by now there would be:

1. Replacement dash trim for around the console and the speedo and steering wheel in other colors like shiny black, matching exterior color, carbon fiber, nice walnut type woodgrain, etc. Not just overlays which never look factory. The silver just makes the car look so cheap. Is it so expensive to set up production to mold plastic?

2. A plethora of different tail lights. I can't believe no one makes them. Maybe it really is expensive to mold plastic?

3. A $500 supercharger kit. A supercharger is 100 year old technology. It's nothing more than a fan driven by the motor. Did you know that it costs Toyota less than $1000 to make a 2AZFE engine? You can't tell me that it's more expensive to build a supercharger than an engine.

4. A replacement of some sort for that rediculous cover over the trunk/hatch that always falls of the headrests. Or some kind of retrofit that make sit stick on the headrests better. Definitely 1973 Ford Pinto type design and fitment there.

 

Well don't forget that the scion is new to the market. Whereas the Civic has been out since 92. Give it some time. I'm actually surprised at how much is out for the Scions now. They probably have the biggest aftermarket for a car thats only 2 years old.

More like '84 I believe, although there wasn't much aftermarket support for them til '92, with the exception of some support for the CRX.

But I actually find it a bit refreshing in a way. I mean, coming from driving my CRX where you can get anything and everything - too much, actually. Problem is, when the market becomes saturated with any and every mod you can think of, in limitless variations, you end up with a bunch of low quality eBay junk that every 16 year old punk *must have* on their car, and it actually detracts from the image of the car itself. And I don't mean that particular kid's car, as ugly as it may be, but rather I mean people stop taking a car (like the CRX) seriously when every one you see has some tacky altezza tail lights, a 4' spoiler, and a fart pipe my lawn mower would be ashamed to wear.

On the other hand, and as I mentioned already, I think it's kind of refreshing to drive a car that most people haven't already molested to the point of being outright gawdy. I can actually wait, and look forward to new and interesting products coming on to the market for a change as they're being developed, and so far, most of them don't totally suck!

I, for one, would like to see it stay that way, even though I know it's only inevitable as the car eventually gets older and highschool heros everywhere can pick one up for under $5k and their little velcro wallets can't buy them "real" mods.

Yeah, I've thought of making some sort of retractable cover ever since I got car. Something similar to roll up windowshades, except it would pull out from the headrest and attach to the mounting points. The current cargo cover is very clumsy and hard to deal with when not needed. I thought about manufacturing one but I don't know what demand there is for this.

I personally don't have a problem with it, but I think what would suit you guys better would be to cut out some thin plywood or stiff plastic and glue it to the bottom of the cover you have. You could even get creative and put a couple of hinges in the middle somewhere so you can fold it up for easy storage.

Yeah, cheap crap... turns 8000 HP on top fuel dragsters every single race. And will most likely be THE only type of induction on those types of cars for some time to come. Turbos are some new thing I guess??? They too are old as ****. They also are a "fan" blowing into the intake, they just use a different source to spin them. turbo and sc technology take research to properly design. I wouldnt buy a $500 kit if you threw it at me cause it would be cheap crap when it was done most likely. SC vs turbo has NOTHING to do with one being necessarrilly more advanced. Its all about the application.

 

I don't think he was trying to compare a turbo to a SC. he was just pointing out that if it cost $1000 to build an entire engine, then it should cost alot less to build a SC, even a good one at that. But you're right, the same holds true for a turbo. Even a very well engineered, high quality turbo should cost less than our entire engine. I would have to point out though, that the price of an engine would certainly come down when you're making 100,000 of them. a SC would too, but they don't sell nearly as many.

 

Yeah, as far as cost, we pay what we do because people have paid it all along. The markup wont go away.

 

#1. Silver looks cheap? It's a < $17k car. What do you want from it? As for the aftermarket of dash pieces, is it something that's really THAT high on your list? That someone should start making it right away?

#2. TYC makes tails, so you can't really say "no one." Honestly though, if the market starts flooding with tails, they're all going to look like crap, but people will buy them anyways, just like 98% of the clear tails in existence.

#3. Show me a $500 supercharger kit for any vechicle that is reliable, dependable and puts out some real numbers. Then show me the same thing for a vehicle that didn't exist 2 years ago.

#4. If that thing is always falling off, you either broke it or it's defective. Mine has not fallen off once the entire time I've owned the car. And I remove it and replace it often to put my seats down and back up.

 

only reason why a 2az is that cheap is because it is a mass produced item, which cuts down tremendously on fabrication costs. A supercharger would never get to that level of production. If you were to design and manufacture a 4cyl engine from scratch, it would surely cost you tens of thousands of dollars if the production volume was not high enough.

 

I also agree about the cargo cover. Works absolutely perfect. As a matter of fact, you actually have to try to make it come off. If it is not staying on, it is broken. I really cant think of a better one out there. I am not a huge fan of the retractable type like my runner has on it.

My cargo cover stays on tight, but is starting to sag in the middle where there's no support (and no, I have never rested anything on top of it). No big deal though, who looks back there anyway?
