Transponder chip programming....
Okay talked to my dad.... now this will probably sound rediculous but here it is.... 1.with a transponder key that works the system.... make shure all doors/windows are closed....
2. you will turn the ignition to on and then off 5 times ending in off.....
3.Next you will open and close the drivers door 6 times....
4.Finnaly you insert the new transponder key turn to on... Your security light will turn off in aprox 60 seconds... then you should be able to start the car...
oh and the valet key is the same as your regular key except it does not have the first 2 cuts and will not work your glove box....

That's what it sounds like. It does sound somewhat ridiculous, but when you think about it, the car doesn't have a very good interface (like a keyboard) so they only have things like the locks, doors, windows, etc. Add to that the fact that they want to make sure you nevr in a million years accidentally program or unprogram something like this, so it has to be strange.

****************
FOR 2002+
1.Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
2.Insert master key into the ignition cylinder.
3.Cycle the ignition cylinder from ON to OFF 5 times.
4.Open and close the driver side door 6 times.
5.Remove the master key and insert the new duplicate key.
6.DO NOT TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON
7.The new key will be registered after 60 seconds. The THEFT light on the
dashboard will go out, indicating that programming has been completed.
"some 2002 will work using the 1998+ programming."
*****************
BUT they say some toyotas need to have their ECU reflashed (pain) if the above procedure isnt successful at programming the new key to work.

I had waited for 5 minutes.. Do you think you need to wait longer?

If it works it would work with in a min...... sorry that it did not work for you.... maybe you could contact a local locksmith let them know that you have a transponder key that needs to be added and see how much they would charge....
Ok, this just experienced, and doubt if many have noticed this. IF you bought a shell from ebay or whatever for $10 or so, you are geting JUST the shell.
There is NO transponder chip! Transeffering the Remote's "Brain" transmitter ONLY works for the door locks. If you open your key, along the rim there is a small rectangular space that has been filled. THIS is where the transponder chip for the immobilizer system is (usually) stored. A blank shell, unless you bought one WITH the transponder chip, will be empty here.
From doing a search, I can NOT find a shell WITH a transponder chip, WITHOUT the remote brain. And, if you had to, you would have to buy the whole replacement remote key, which I've seen for around $100 or so. ($150 retail at a dealership) By the way, removing the chip from an original key is VERY difficult! If anyone knows an alternative way, that's great.
The Dance listed throughout this thread is just for the locks. And my technician does this when reprogramming remotes. But he still uses a computer with interface to the OBDII to program the transponder chip. If there was another way, I know he would do it, without lugging the computer around. So if there is a way to program a blank chip key without a computer, I assume it would make things easier for thieves to steal a car. Again, I am not 100% sure that there is no other way.

you revived this thread to tell us this?
yes.. Toyota uses their Techstream computers to program the ECU to respond to the chip. Nothing really new....
and it is possible to remove the chip from an old key to transplant it into a new one. difficult? well, not enough to have many people doing it to just have a different key. there are DIYs posted here on how to do it.
