Wow, the fact that they used screws would make me very mad if it was my car. At least put it under the dash out of the way.

my buddy had one of these installed in his explorer that he got from a local buy here pay here place...and see as he has bad credit. But the guy at the shop even said u can hit XXXXX and override the system for 3 times. Well recently my buddy had a Viper alarm installed and it appears that unit is pretty much just put inline with the ignition harness so that item has been BYPASSED :-) looked just like the one in the picture too just the dealer was smart enough to put up and under the dash not on the outside and visible LMAO

My dad.. a non ase certified mechanic with 40 + years experience has fixed countless rookie screw ups from local dealerships at a much cheaper labor rate, in less time and at actual time spent... not straight book labor and no minimum shop time. That is why the dealerships lose their customers as soon as warranty is out and why he keeps his for 20+ years.

That is why people are leary of dealerships. I do 100% of my own work, but honestly the last place I would go would be a dealership if I had to take it elsewhere. And I know there are a lot of good techs at dealerships. I have known a couple.. and they constantly complained about the hoardes of moron techs that were hired simply due to being certified and having to deal with the bad name those people gave them. They also both agreed that if they couldnt work on their own.. the dealer was the last place they would go It is sad really. But it is due to the whole concept of "he is ase certified.. and we can send him to our training, so he will be a good tech".
your right 100%. some places are dead on and some places shouldn't have a license to work on vehicles. i took the ASE test years ago and most of those scenarios are so easy. i had a certification to handle refrigerant. but that was back in 2001. it cost money to re certify all the time. but the general public like to see that "patch" I'm gonna get back into it since I'm unemployed and I've been dealing with cars way too long in my life so far. worked at a high end dealer who sold and serviced BMWs Ferrari's and Maserati.

I also do about 85-90% of my work unless its something i really don't mind letting the dealer take a stab at like alignments since i never learned or looked up the string alignment routine. These cars are built so well i think the 5 years i owned this this it was at the dealer 6 times. including the 3 free oil changes i got when the car was new. a gas tank replacement (warranty) and drive belts because it was cold all week.

the "job" on the install posted in the beginning of the thread is not that great. it was overlooked by the owner and should have been addressed before pickup/delivery. my mom's Certified Corolla had an alarm on it and they didn't remove the little LED on top of the steering column. their are no alarm pieces that are active on the car but if she was **** like most of us are about our vehicles, I'd write a complaint thread about it too.

as fro what it is I do not know but looking at it I would not allow it to be there like that......that is gradeschool work.

Ok, we got the car from Manhattan Beach Scion in SoCal last month, brand new, it had like 3 miles on it. I unplugged it and the car started just fine. It must be from the security they had, the dealer had to hit the door with his fist before opening it and hit the steering wheel before starting it, he said it was some kind of shock security they had. The only "security" i have is the panic button on the keyfob and remote lock/unlock, which is standard, i believe.

the dealer is an hour and a half away so i think i'll just unscrew the thing and fill the holes with something rather than drive all that way just to have a new dash put in for something so small.

You shouldn't have to hit the car to make it do anything. It is brand new. In the tC the security is only if they open the door. No motion sensors, no glass break sensors. The fact that he was hitting the car is very fishy.

Hit the door and steering wheel? Sounds like someone is giving you a run around. I would take it in and say you want any security device removed that is not an option with the car.

The scion security system (an option) has a glass break sensor that replaces one of the switch panels.

Any system that requires hitting the door is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard of

my friends 01 Mazda Protege MP3 (rip ) had some wicked crazy alarm like that. you touch or tap the car, it gets upset and the alarm chirps. it's like a vibration sensor.

BMW's have a motion sensor in all of their vehicles except the E46 3 series.

if it's a "new" car check your option list they may have installed something you didn't know about and they did a horrible job installing whatever they installed. but have them get rid of it, make it look like new out of their pocket and worse comes to worse, get the legal people on it!

he only had to hit the door and steering wheel when the security was on but it's disabled so i just use the keyfob to unlock. no hitting required.

"vibration sensor," that's the term was looking for

Yea, thats exactly what we used at my dealer. You hold the disarm on our universal fob, hit the car to unlock it (we usually had the keys for the car to do that) then hit the steering wheel to disarm and start the car.

They just took the chip out of your brain (the ugly part screwed into the dash) to de-activate it or whatever, but they left the unit behind.

Ohwell.. if you don't want to hassle with it, just do what you said and take it out. Then put the screws back in the holes I guess

I can't wait until a dealer dents a car showing the owner how to use the system (or the owner for that fact). I would freak if I saw anyone from the dealer doing this to my car. Security or not.

I know that some dealerships around here have temporary alarms they put on the new cars so that they don't get stolen off the lot. They then offer the security to the new owners, and if they new owners don't want it, they disable it.

he was hitting the top of the door, where it meets the roof, so it was pretty impossible to dent. it was just a light pounding, maybe 3lbs of force?
