ive been hearing noises during slow turns and when i checked under the car i can see grease coming out from the driver side boot. if im already hearing noises is it safe to assume i cant quick fix with just a boot change and grease? im thinking ill need to replace the whole unit but im so broke atm.

I don't know for sure I just know both times it made a clunk sound when I tried to put it in drive..... Got it fixed shortly after though for free since my axle had warranty, some transmission shop in town installed them , and the weren't oem but like a oem spec if that makes sense...

I hope I don't have to fix mine again any time soon. I've already placed both, and they tore again within the month that I replace the whole axle. I've been rolling like that for a couple of months though. No clunking yet like what happened before.

dospod: if you hear a clunk when you put it in drive, it may not even be your axles..

jerrik: lol dude, i know how you feel man!! im on #4 for axles.. but the last set is doing good considering im stock height. lol

dam: no clue.. lol if you have coilovers, check your preload.. also, check if your camber arms are hitting the sway bar.. annnd, see if your wheel bearings are okay by jacking up the car and spinning them freely without the e brake on.

I've never really paid attention , what could it possibly be if I hear a clunk???

At least car hasn't broken an axle yet again, and seems to run smooth...

Wow, well at least I'm not the only one with this problem. I noticed my boots leaking months ago. I didn't have the funds to do anything about it at the time so I just kept riding on and tried to drive as little as possible. The past two weeks I noticed a faint clicking coming from my front right when I accelerated. Now this week it has turned into a full on clunking/wobble at acceleration. After reading this whole thread twice the problem is obvious.

But...

How can I tell if it is actually my CV joint or if I need to replace the whole axle?? I mean I have been driving with the torn boots for a while. But I don't want to just replace the boots and CV joints and then find out after I needed new axles. But at the same time I don't want to pay for new axles if it's not necessary.

I know this thread is old.. and probably getting old to everyone who's been following it from the beginning. But could anyone please give some advice?

you can't just switch out the joint, i dont think.. but if you hear clicking, feel vibrations/wobble, you're too late..

i'd say just switch out your axles, and wait another 60k or so before getting new ones (depending on how low you are/how hard you drive your car)

My FR CV boot has a small tear in it and is slowly leaking grease when I last checked it 2-3 weeks ago. I do not hear any sounds turning to the right..I only hear sounds as I turn to the left very sharply and fast and/or reversing while turning my steering wheel towards the right.

It sounds like a loud creaking sound, similar to tires rubbing. But I am on 15x7.5 +40 steelies and stock suspension for the winter..

Any thoughts? Like if its just the CV boot, or you think it maybe the axle, or perhaps might be another problem?

maybe your brakes are worn out.. i had a similar problem too and found out that the brake pads were down to the minimum, and it just scraped the rotor making a rubbing sound more than a grinding sound.

oh hmm, yes my front brakes are at around 15-20%..was planning on changing them as soon as i get my tax refund.
but i should still replace the cv boot since it is cut a little bit and some grease has leaked out.. i mean other then that i dont hear any noises when turning like no creaking or anything thanks ben

i got some noise coming from my front right wheel, basically, when im slowing to a stop, right as im stopping still when the car leans forward i hear a tension popping sound, like "PONG", then when the car shifts the weight back, another lighter "pong"

sometimes its two pongs, sometimes 1, happens almost all the time, sounds sometimes when i go over speedbumps and my brakes are applied, but doesnt happen when i go over bumps and dips when im driving.

already had my car on a lift and checked every single bolt, had a loose A arm bolt, fixed it and sound is still there, its not the shock since it does not sound when compressing it standing still, im leaning towards axles or bearings making the noise.

any ideas?

So the other day.. well a few weeks ago I was swapping my coilovers out for some new ones, and since the inner boot on my axles are ripped, when I pulled out the coilover, the axle broke in half. The bearings fell out of the housing, and the whole hub/rotor/knuckle assembly dropped down on the both sides.

I freaked out, thought I'd have to replace the axles again. I was able to shove the bearings back in and I bought some axle grease from Kragen and wrapped it up with some plastic bags and duct tape. That only lasted a few days and I ended up ripping the plastic back off, so I'm sure the grease all sprayed out once again.

Made a drive to Orange County this past weekend and made it up and back fine. No vibrations or even any clicking when I turn the wheels so my bearings seem to be intact still. I'll probably eventually change them out for some new ones though, need to hit up autozone for some new axles.

John: Yeah, you should probably replace em asap.. you don't wanna wait til its too late. (both brakes and cv boots)

Chico: looks like you covered everything except for your preload. When i hear a pong on my car from when i had coilovers, it's cuz the preload was loose and the springs would pop making a "pong" sound. (i understand that you gotta relieve your preload to go low, but that might be your problem)

jerrik: LOL that happened to me when i was pulling out my axles.. half of it just popped out.. i was like wtf?!?! hahahahaha check this out btw.. i bought mine here too
