Default Ball Joints and testing

I have a knock in the front suspension ( I think) and I believe it could be the ball joint as the struts are new. Reading the manual it says to raise the car and test the ball joint by putting plywood between it and the wheel. Then move it vertical, however Im not sure what Im looking for ie what should it do normally or when its defective. Also can the ball joint be removed without removing the axle nut?
