Default Why am i rubbing on 18x8 with 35 offset?

So my new wheels/tires are rubbing, and i can't figure out WHY. Everyone i talk to says 18x8 with 35 offset is the perfect size for the TC. Even Axis Wheels says that's what they run on their cars. So why the hell am i rubbing?

I was on TRD springs before... and i would rub at dips and bumps.. so i changed out to coilovers and that didn't help.

The really weird thing is that i went from 19x8.5 with 35 offset running 225/35/19 tires with NO RUBBING.. to now running 18x8 with 35 offset running 225/40/18.. and having rubbing issues. WTF!!

Tires are General Exclaim UHP. Anyone have any idea?

I rub a lil on 18x8 with 35 offset but rarely now with coilovers, but it used to be a lot when i just had springs.. Just try to adjust the height a lil higher maybe it will help..

Hey Jonathan,

I see now that you race the tire size to 40 and as for the other rims they were 35 meaning that the tire stretch in order to tuck in.

maybe your coilovers are adjusted lower than the TRD springs.

i saw your setup at the Sept 1 autobacs meet. the tire tread blocks on your tires are too wide. not all 225/40/18 tires are created equally. my wife's Mazda3 runs 18x8, 225/40/18 Falken Ziex (I also have these) and her tread is not was bolstered as your Generals.

Here's a pic of her 225/40/18 falken ziex 512 on 18x8 when the tires were brand new. the tread blocks are dont stick out as much as yours.

OHHHH.. so you think i'll be ok if i change out to Falkens? are her wheels 35 offset also? The 512's aren't that sticky though right? I'm looking for high performance but not too expensive.

haha.. Wes was telling me i should talk to you.

i TOLD you it was the tires...hey Won, how much did you get the Ziex for? I'm lookin to pick up another pair, and how long did they last you? My front set has only lasted 10k miles and the tread is already balding

Well.. i called my tire store that i got the Generals from. The Falken 512's are discontinued, and replaced by the 912's. I wonder if the 912 shoulder block is the same as 512?

your new wheels are not as wide as your older ones, and you still have the same offset. might want to go with a slightly higher offset.

wider rims call for a lower offset which narrower rims call for a higher offset....

her offset is et50, but that doesnt matter. The same tire (not the wheel) from her car would not rub as much on your car.

Falken Ziex are not sticky. If you want sticky tires that wont rub, then go with Yokohama Parada 2, Yokohama ES100, Toyo Proxes 4. These I have from personal experience. If money is no object, get some Michelin Pilot Sports or Bridgestone Pole Position S01. From what I hear, Generals dont have a good reputation as being a performance tire.

in the mean time, you can raise your car a little

I buy my Ziex 512s for $390 mounted & balanced for a set of 4. I’ve never bought only 2, so I’d expect it’ll be $5-10 more per tire if you don’t buy a set. I don’t understand why yours have worn out so fast. They have a 360 tread rating, which means they are 30,000+ mile tires. I usually get about 20,000 miles per set because of my negative camber. Unless youre driving aggressively a lot or have a lot of negative camber, I don’t see why the only last you 10,000 miles.

You have it backwards.
Wider wheels require higher offsets because the wider wheel sticks out further in both directions. A 9” wheel sticks out 12mm more in each direction compared to a 8” wheel. So you would need a higher offset to push that wheel in.
Narrower wheels don’t stick out as much, so you can push them out with a lower offset.

In the rear a 18x8 et18 would sit the same as my 18x9 et30 wheels.

yea I don't get it either, I bought the Ziex because of the high tread life, I got my car re-aligned about a month back, we'll see if that helps a bit, If your going to the Chino meet tonite then I'll show you, if not, then i'll take pics
