Can you hit 60 in 2nd gear?
I'm sure it would, or alternatively it would cut the throttle so you don't exceed the rev limit. I'm pretty sure in my automatic I've done 60 in 2nd gear before, it's easier in the automatic because it has taller gears so it requires lower engine revolutions. That's not as true during the early acceleration phase, because half of the torque converter is playing catch up to the engine, but by the time you've reached steady state that effect is negligible. Aside, in 4th gear and above, the torque converter lock-up clutch activates, so you can safely drive around in S4, S5, or S6 mode and not worry about creating excess heat for the transmission -- also gives you a touch more immediate torque, not really anything to write home about though.
Hi Steve,
The gear ratios are as follows:
First Gear Ratio (:1) 3.54
Second Gear Ratio (:1) 2.05
Third Gear Ratio (:1) 1.38
Fourth Gear Ratio (:1) 1.03
Fifth Gear Ratio (:1) 0.88
Sixth Gear Ratio (:1) 0.73
Reverse Ratio (:1) 3.56
Final Drive Axle Ratio (:1) 4.06
Doing the math, 2nd gear ratio divided by 6th gear ratio is 2.79. I do 2400rpm at 60mph in 6th gear. Multiplying the 2400rpm (6th gear/60mph) by 2.79 equals 6700, which slightly exceeds the redline in this vehicle.
So I'd say, no, it shouldn't be possible, but we have people testifying that they've done it. Who knows what to believe.

I should add, my figures provided a few minutes ago are the manual transmission. I believe Steve was trying to provide numbers for the automatic transmission. Also, according to another source on the Internet, cleanmpg.com, the manual transmission in 6th gear turns 2316rpm at 60mph. If those numbers are right and my estimate of 2400rpm is wrong, then in 2nd gear the manual transmission should be turning 6460rpm (at 60mph).

Also I estimated ~6460 RPM as well. It is possible with stock tire size, barely.
My xb2 (auto) will sit and bounce off the rev limiter if I am in 'sport' mode, and do not tell it to shift into 3rd.
