VVT-i is always active. It is Variable Valve Timing. It works throughout the entire RPM range. It isn't like high lift V-tech from Honda or VVT-iL from toyota (The L stands for Lift) really only the Toyota Celica GTS has VVT-iL

It's actually VVTL-i. (Variable Valve Timing Lift Intelligence) The 2000-2005 Celica GT-S had VVTL-i along with the Matrix XRS and Corolla XRS, at the time at least.

I know lift typically kicks in around 6200rpms. My brother had a 2004 Celica GT-S.

Not really. The whole process of variable valve timing is really more for fuel efficiency. Despite the Celicas having a 2ZZ-GE (VVTL-i), they only made about 180-190HP, and the fastest year for the 2ZZ Celica was 2000. That particular year you could rev up all the way to like 8200rpms or something like that and land lift the next gear.

I notice it mostly accelerating up steeper inclines. Its almost as if the car accelerates faster uphill when barely pressing the gas vs. Full throttle. It would be nice if Toyota could combine the vvti and the concept of Hondas vtec all into one bad ___ little four banger

That's what the 2ZZ-GE was. Look up videos of Celicas hitting lift on YouTube. Lift in my opinion kicks in harder than i-VTEC. Toyota discontinued the motor because the emissions were bad in Europe or something like that.

Such a noob question but i'm glad he asked.

What the Hell, I thought we had something that kicked in at a certain RPM.
____ing placebo effect. When my engine is roaring and i'm speeding, i'm like yeaaa, listen to that VVTI Kick in. Stupid.

i can hear and feel VVT-i kick in around 4500RPM. at least thats what it seems... i have a K&N drop-in and a rear muffler delete and with traction and vsc turned off i can hear and feel it kick in. just not quite as harsh as honda V-tech

Please read and understand...there is no "kick-in" with VVT-i. it is working throughout the entire RPM band. Peak engine torque is probably around 4k (not sure on the 2AR engine), and you feel the car accelerate faster because it is in the thick part of its powerband.
