Maintenance Question
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. I didn't really know where to put it. I just went in for my 5,000 mile maintenance appointment and got the tires rotated and what not, but not the oil changed. They said it didn't need to be changed until 10,000 miles since its synthetic. That sounds really high to me and I guess I was wondering what everyone else did and if I should request to get it changed anyways?
theis topic has been discussed briefly. heres the link.

I read that in the maintenance booklet as well. The girl who helped me at the dealership seemed pretty adamant about following that as well. Thanks for the other link.. I didn't really look through the old posts.
synthetic oil vs regular oil
synthetic is new...just starting to roll out in new cars (like ours) and it calls for oil changes for only 10k
people usually dont believe it because its new

i just got my 5,000 mile oil change yesterday the dealer tried to tell me the same bs but it clearly states at least in my manual and from what they told me when i bought the car that the oil is changed every 5,000 miles. they said for scion toyota pays for the first two oil changes for free before the warranty kicks in and covers the rest. Needless to say i got mine changed for free! i also made sure the stealership put in full synthetic 0-20w insted of them trying to put 5-20w. i say take it back and get your oil change. My maintenance light was also on for the oil change i think it comes on 500 miles before an oil change is due.

edit:
what kj says is true they told me 10,000 miles i asked for the manager and stated my case they checked it out and i was right. But now that i take a closer look at my manual the one above it says change oil if you drive on dusty or dirt roads mabye because i live in texas and its dusty down here made them change the oil? either way i got a free one lol

I payed for mine at 5K because I did not feel right with a brand new engine going to 10k. Then the dealer over filled it by at least a quart......
Made the service manager put it in writing that it had been over filled and had him sign it, so when my seals go out, guess who is gonna pay for it?
No matter what service you are going to have done, I cant stress enough to check your ENTIRE vehical before you drive away, including the amount of oil they put in.

There is no benefit to getting the oil changed early. Even someplace like Texas isn't dirty enough to require an early change. If the manual requires changes every 10k miles, the avg person could go probably 15k miles before the particles per million is bad enough to really need a change.

One of you guys need to do a DIY on changing that dang oil filter. (looking at you 2tCornot2tC....)
Seriously was going to do mine at 1k myself, but this is how my trip went:
Go to Autozone, grab all the oil, look up my filter, scratch my head cause I have never seen a filter like this, check out, go to the car to look it up in the manual, find nothing, call a buddy who lives to work on cars, still have no idea how to do it, go back in Autozone and return all items......
I felt like a fool, but no one else in the store knew how to change that type of filter either.

Never take an engineers word on maintenance.
Listen to the maintenance guys!
Though it certainly won't hurt to change the oil early and if it's free, go for it.
I am curious though. I looked up the oil filter and saw 2 different types come up. A common, screw on filter and a drop-in, cartridge filter. And this isn't from different websites. It's one website showing 2 different styles with 2 different part numbers.
I'd actually be rather impressed if Toyota went to the cartridge filter. Had that on my BMW M Roadster. Add in running Redline Motor Oil with it and my oil came out clean every 10K miles!

10K is correct. Scion uses Nippon Eneos 0-20 full synthetic oil. Make sure they do use this when u get your oil change. From I read this is one of the best high performance oils in Japan.

The dealer I went to had no idea what Nippon Eneos was. Dont expect them to have it on the shelf ready when you get there. They can order it, but could take awhile. You need to call and have them order it in advance.
Am I missing something here? How do the dealerships not know about this new filter/oil setup? Why do we need to have them special order the correct type of oil? Isn't this the same engine used in the Camry/Rav4? Is our filter/oil setup somehow different in the tC application?
