Default relay harness heat

I just installed a relay harness to my HID kit,
positive 12v to 12v + terminal on battery and negative to ground on chasis of frame, once I turn the lights on, the relay harness gets really hot! it almost started to melt, talking about the cable tht connects to the + terminal of battery.
why does it heat up so bad?
40 amp relay
30 amp fuse

I'm no expert but... HID's have electronics inside controlling the bulb that can be damaged by heat. Halogen lights don't.

Also, what you're basically looking at is a bolt of lightning that runs a lot hotter than a filament. And at the base of the actual capsule, there's the issue with heat and temperature. It runs at much higher temperatures but there might be an overall smaller amount of heat.

I was running my HIDs with the relay, lights went out, smoke started coming out of hood, inspected only to find the relay harness has completely melted, did I get a crap harness?

Sounds like something is being shorted out. It is possible that you have received a bad harness, but the fact that the wiring melted makes me believe that the harness you received cannot handle the load. Why are you running a relay harness anyway? I never had problems just doing plug n play HID's on Toyota's. So far my tC2, my moms Rav, my fathers Venza (2 of them), and Camry were just plug n play and never had issues.

Try them, and their HID kits have gotten good reviews also. If the prices seem a bit up there, remember, you get what you pay for. From where did you originally get the relay harness?

Bought my two harnesses from autolumination.com and they've been going strong since day one. My most recent one is now about 4-5 months old and the older one is about 10 months old. Not a single issue, constructed well, and a good seller. The relay harness was like $11 or $12 I believe.
