its not a whining its a very loud BRRRrrrr sound
though i did notice these cars sometimes have a very mechanical noise they make with their engines when they are accelerated normally in 3rd and 4rth gears. kinda reminds me of a mac truck lol (not the loudness, just the general noise. it's definitely not exhaust. more like faint sound of gears or something, i cant explain it. maybe diesely sound?) does yours do the same thing? also when you ease off the accelerator then go back on and then ease off again sometimes it will make the mech sound.

I hear wining from engine /trans only in first gear and also in reverse gear. no other gears.

When I drove from PA to TX, I average about 34mpg. That is both calculated and the car's average. Speed was on average 75mph. Back at school my commute is 15 minutes, so my mileage is terrible.

I think the noise you guys here on deceleration is the exhaust gurgling for air. Very common on manual cars, an also more noticeable with an exhaust.

i think stock exhaust is loud enough for me haha! i feel like it can almost vibrate windows. it does vibrate house windows in winter when cold idling, kinda annoying when i start in the morning.

is it bad for the engine if the exhaust is gurgling?
i do not think i hear the same effect on an auto tC.

anyway back to mpg, how'd you get 34mpg going 75 on highway!? how many miles total was that trip that averaged 34mpg? and was that including stops, traffic, city driving, etc? obviously majority will be highway.

How old is your house? My stock exhaust hardly did anything in my garage, now my Tsudo S2 and my old axle back would vibrate.

And no it is not bad for the engine, it is quite normal.

As for the MPG's, I was shocked myself. I recalculated it twice each fill up and average was 34mpg. I think it was due to being on cruise control and mostly flat roads. This was strictly highway, only stopping I did was for fuel at which point I ran to the bathroom and grabbed more energy drinks. So about 1500 miles non stop, no traffic, no city driving at all.

House is older than 50 years i think. the kitchen door window vibrates in winter. it doesnt seem loose but maybe its less rigid than all the other windows in the house.
Stock exhaust is especially loud when driving in low gears and decelerating. i love it :D I cannot believe it is stock on a scion tC. old scions are super quiet. gen 2 automatic tCs are louder, and gen 2 manuals are even louder than that apparently.

Ah i see so that's almost 100% highway. yeah that sounds about right. still very good! that is one beast of a drive...

Ah ok makes sense. I think the stock exhaust is louder than most for stock but not loud enough for me.

Yeah it was one hell of a drive, did it non stop. tC took it like a champ.

I would be petrified in the car seat if I ever attempted that. although the tC's seats are quite comfortable...maybe that saved you haha.

After about 10 hours of driving my back started to hurt, so stretching at every fuel stop helped along with my co-pilot (who doesn't drive stick) helping out with massages.

Wow I think sitting in any chair for 10 hours would kill your back. That's why mine is basically fully reclined when I drive

I get 21.4 mpg.. but I'm about 95% city driving.

As far as noise when cruising in an A/T? It's there. Sure the car has TRD exhaust but you can definitely hear the engine whine and exhaust at highway speed. It's not deafening like a straight piped Honda... but it's definitely there. In the sport mode (paddles / shifter engaged) I don't have any clunks or booms when decelerating. Just a whine like the car is supercharged.

the engine does not have whine at highway speed in manual i don't think? correct me if I'm wrong all you manual drivers out there.
The exhaust sound is strongly there. Even with just stock exhaust.
Looks like you notice the exhaust more in an auto car when it's upgraded to the TRD because that is supposed to be slightly louder and deeper. But i was talking about stock auto vs stock manual.

I am taking in my car for the 15,000mile service soon so looks like my mpg average for this 5,000mile time frame is going to be 29.5mpg. darn good.

Cool. And I was telling my mpg and commenting on the engine noise. Considering we both have the same engine, that runs the same pulleys / belt, I'd say they both make the same noise.

Yes, agreed, but the way the particular trannys drive that engine can be different, which explains why I'm hearing manual tC to be louder than autos. I am almost certain this is the case based on just this 2nd gen. the first gens are much quieter overall since their exhaust setup is different.
