Default 2006 xA NON-folding mirrors???

Long story short- I bought an xA. Id talked my mom into buying one in 2003 when she needed a new car, and i was very impressed by it. Kept my old civic for a few more years, waited for the honda fit to be released, wasnt impressed. So i got an xA of my very own.

One of the things i liked on my moms was the folding mirrors- my garage is VERY tight, with 2 motorcycles along the left side, one of which is my daily commuter. I knew about the "improvements" for 2006- audio system, controls, side sills, indicators in the mirrors, etc...

So i buy one, take the thing home, and then i notice the mirrors dont fold! Ive got literally 1cm of spare room before im either scraping garage wall or motorcycle. Ive already hit the wall once. Gently. javascript:emoticon('')
Pray

So day2 of ownership, im at the scion dealer, ordering $500 worth of "old style" folding mirrors, that im going to have to reverse engineer and try to get the wiring figured out. My car has 5 wires, 2 obviously being for the turn signal. my moms car has 3. Ive already taken the passenger side off and test probed with a 12v light. ive got a ground, 3 for various mirror directions, and a 12v+ for the signal figured out.

Has anyone here been in that predicament before? any tips? any clues on which color wires (from the "old" mirrors") match up to which 3 colors on the harness (car portion) that goes to the "new" mirrors? If anyone can help, thanks a bunch! I love the car, but im in the 1% or so that actually USES the folding option. Whats really funny is the owners manual even says they fold. the divot in my garage wall says otherwise.

The 06 manual says they fold back. I'm guessing it needs an update.

You might want to consider the power folding JDM style that a lot of the boxes have....

i made sure to write a letter to scion, including a copy of the owners manual page, the bill for the 2 folding mirrors, and a picture of the scion in my garage. not that itll matter, of course.

Call customer service right now. That shouldn't be in the manual if it's not on the car.

My mom recently got her powertrain warranty exteded because of a misprint in the manual of her Hyundai Santa Fe.

And that's a Hyundai. Toyota/Scion should be updating their manuals.

I sent em a letter. Hopefully, ill get some kind of reply. I doubt theyll pick up the $489 cost of em, but who knows? Maybe ill get some free schwag! If i dont hear anything from them, i WILL call customer service. I just figured a letter with copies of everything and pictures would illustrate my case a bit clearer.

The new mirrors came in yesterday, and the install was completely uneventful. they just bolted on and plugged in to the door harness. the color matched outer covers snapped right on and match the car color perfectly. So now im a happy camper, the mirrors fold and work great, and the 2 day old mirrors are going on ebay.

Any idea why they made them non-folding for 2006? Did the extra 2 wires somehow cause a problem with the mirrors being able to fold?

That's really strange. On a small car like the Scion xA I doubt I'd personally ever need to fold them, but I'm really surprised they took away that feature.

they just took the tC side mirrors... (that don't fold) and fit it into the xA... from what i can see.. alot of it has to do with the wiring and stuff for the mirrors as to why it doesn't fold. (that's my guess)

us tC guys have to deal with the same thing...
