xA with HIDs + glare shield anyone?
I have been looking into HIDs for my xA. While the best solution would be to get projectors, I don't think want to spend close to 1k for a full retrofit. At the same time however, I do not want to endanger others on the road by recklessly blinding them. Here is what I am currently considering after doing some research on the forums and such. I have a friend who can get the prolumen kit for 250 out the door. However, this kit does not come with any sort of glare shield. Instead of getting a rebased H4 kit, I am considering getting a glare shield along with a D2R HID kit. I have also read that some have painted this glare shield with a matte, high temperature black paint so that it will absorb even more light. Has anyone ever tried this approach to reduce glare? I know that it won't be possible to eliminate 100% of the glare, but perhaps most of it? Opinions and experiences are welcome, thanks! If I do end up doing this, I will certainly post pictures.
When I did a retrofit on my 94 prelude, I ended up going with Audi HID with the projectors. I did this because it took all of the guess work out of it. I didn't want to blind anyone and I knew that the HID's were made to go with the projectors. I don't know about the glare sheilds. Have you thought about integrating projectors that are matched?
Yeah I would like to do the same with the HID on the xA but I cant agree with ditching the High Beam option so if I grow some ***** and do a proper retro with Bi Xenon system. I would rip mine from a maxima!

I dont understand how you people are getting glare off of your HID setups. I have an o6xa, 8000kelvin High intensity discharge setup with rockblocker Hid film(was only supossed to be for the winter, but everyone else diggs it). I do not have glare
i have a 05 xA with HID...the kit is SO bright with no glare problem for one......car lowered 2in dropping the beam height....second they came with sheilds......the kit im running is by HALO made 100% in Japan......uf unterested pm Addictive Racing about em.....Local Performance Shop in Tucson....ive even been asked about em from other HID owners because the color and light output is wicked they wanna switch out to these.....ill take some night shots for you guys later and post em
i was interested in doing some hid upgrade... there were the basic ones (no high beam), i think one style where you can have HID as low beam while the high beam is halogen bulb. one kit i think increases the light output (they suggest that you dont use it too often as it shortens bulb life) and another whick i'm probably gonna go for, which has a shield that moves to cover and uncover the bulb which changes the beam pattern. it's called bi-xenon, or bi-x. i saw a price online for $299 with a claim for 20 minutes install for a beginner.add $18 for shipping in the usa. but they have a disclaimer that its for off-road or show.
Most of the plug and play kits can be installed easily in under 20 mins for sure as all you are doing is removing the stock halogen bulbs and replacing with the xenon ones, those plug into a ballast that you need to mount somewhere (some come with brackets, double-sided tape, or zip-tys) and the ballasts all come with some sort of wire harness that connects to the stock headlight plug to supply the power.
The cleaner you would like your install to be the longer it will take to route the wires and put the ballasts somewhere out of sight so it looks more like a factory setup when you pop the hood.
Glare shields are a must have on the H4 setups, always buy a kit that comes with them just note that not all shields are the same and different housings will also affect the beam pattern, the ones that jeffy1021 was taking about are Casper shields (Casper Electronics) they are very nicely made billet adapters that go in to a H4 housing and let you run a D2R bulbs (just buy a plug and play kit for the bulb setup as it will be easyier and cleaner than sourcing OEM parts and rigging up a setup). Also make sure your setup is waterproof so you don't have to worry about the lights going out because of puddles or washing your car! Get a relay harness so you can get power right from the battery to the ballasts skipping the stock wiring so you don't have to worry about frying anything on your factory harnesses. Of course the best setup is a retrofit using a projector/bulb off an OEM setup but most people don't want to go through the trouble of attempting it. Final reminder, if you car did not come with HIDs from the factory (not an option on Scions in the US) retrofit or kit will not be street legal no matter how nice the beam is...or if the seller says it is DOT approved!
