any TRICKS on getting better MPG ?
Lots of good advice. My first tank was 36mpg even, it just went up from there to 38mpg. I have a stick shift model and drive most interestate at 65-85mph down the interestate. I shift at 3 grand and drive so it sounds like an electric car vs the vroommm sound it makes when you give it too much gas. I drive about 20 miles a day in 3 trips and 113 miles twice a month. I think if I can control my speed with a cruise control system, I may break 40 as its too easy to speed and race people down the interestate. I rather set it and forget it.
I kind of miss my 12 gal tank days
I'm going to miss it even more once summer comes along.
Anyway, I don't know if any other tC owners are witnessing this too...owning CAI increases MPG.
Ever since I got the TRD CAI; I have increase extra 3 miles per gal so about 42 miles per a tank.
I'm a driver of lead foot, late braker, sharp turning and only drive 5-10 mph over. I also do alot of city driving

I now have my tires inflated to 34psi. You can tell a difference in ride quality. The last tank I checked I got 38.9mpg. Now I can't scrap up enough money to afford a whole tank, LOL. $2.89/gal is about the lowest I can find.

Ouch, man is that per gallon or per a liter? I just got my cruise control system and almost connected, so be exciting to see if my mpg increases as its too easy to race folks down the interestate and exceed the posted limit many times over.
Just an FYI, when the light turns green, I am the slowest and last car to cross the street. Plus I let off the gas if it starts to go vrooom and make it sound like its an electric car. Sure it may take a minute to get to highway speed, but its nice getting near prius fuel economy for ten grand less.

I saw a thing on the news the other about some guy that had wrote a book about gas mileage. He said he never comes to a complete stop at stop lights. He had a about a few hundred ways to increase mileage.
Ever since I got my xA I've driven quite differently than my old car. My old car was a '98 Mazda Protege that was advertised at about 32mpg highway. I drive about 90% highway and was only getting 25mpg at best.
My first fillup was 33mpg, second was 35, this last fillup was 39.
The three biggest things I've changed is I ease down on the gas, I anticipate when stop lights are going to turn red so I let up on the gas and just coast toward the light, and I've accepted the fact that driving stupid fast and working your engine harder really doesn't get you there all that faster. I keep the car at about 68ish (and I've also learned how to keep a constant speed, no more lead-footing it) and my ride to work only takes about 45 minutes instead of the 40 before when I would keep up with the fast lane. I've now adopted the slow lane as my home.
I do a lot more conservative driving; I'm not so aggressive and I drive it really easy. I also switch the car into neutral when I'm at a long stop (I drive an automatic). I keep the O/D on almost all of the time, the only time I ever take it off is when I really need some passing power, and even then it's only a few seconds of oomph.
I used to have to fill up twice a week with my commute, but I've knocked it down to just one tank per week with the xA. I love it, and I haven't even added anything to the car.
And with gas prices hitting central CA at $3.50+, I'm happy it does so great.

I know that certain brands of fuel delivery better performance & economy. My 03 Saturn VUE runs smoother and is more responsive when using SUNOCO or Hess. If I use Mobil, it seems sluggish and I get less mpg's. I use the ScanGauge II in the VUE and I average 26.5mpg almost constantly. My fuel economy stays the same on highway trips as long as I keep to 70 MPH. The VUE's 5th gear is geared more for power to pass instead of for fuel economy. The ScanGauge II has not been used in the Xa yet. I just filled up with MOBIL at the same pump / station I did a few days ago. I received 35.2 mpg. I know once I get the SGII hooked up I will learn to drive more efficiently. Anyway...Is there a sepecifc brand of fuel that the Xa's motor runs better on?
I've actually Excel'd my MPG since i've bought the car new and have noted the brand of the fuel I use and the MPGs i've got. So far, that hasn't been much difference between Arco, Chevron, Mobil, Shell and 76 but so far the best MPG i've got from a brand has been Chevron and Shell has been the worst. Now, I barely have 3k on my car, so here's to hoping the economy gets better.
I filled up at a Chevron first, and a BP next, and both advertised they contained ethanol. Their mpg ratings for me were about average I'd say.
My last fillup at a place called fastrip, which doesn't advertise ethanol, yielded the best mileage for me.

...lighter wheels, narrower tires (not good for traction!), a ScanGauge, and wanting it bad enough...
I have the lighter wheels, but they are wider and the tires on them are beefy (225/15/50). However, using a ScanGauge II, I'm able to mind my acceleration, mpg, etc. I love using the SGII to find the sweet spot when drafting others on the highway... :D
