I'm not sure... my tC has the location, but nothing inserted for it as well... people have made DIY filters for them with good results, but you do lost a bit of cooling flow... and that's why I think they left them out... better cooling without...
If that is the filter inside your glove box it is a cabin air filter. You can buy one at Kragens for about $12. They fit the xA, xB, and Rav4. There are a few posts on making them. If you buy from Toyota they are over $30. Not sure what stores you have available in Guam--so you might want to look at the DIY section.
The cabin air filter is an optional extra just like floor mats. The dealer has 'em (overpriced at most dealers) or you can make one yourself - the DIY instructions are in the tech section here.
My xA and xB Both have cabin air filters - one is a genuine Toyota, the other is home made. (No, neither came with.)

So how do I convince my dad (he doesn't believe me) that there's no filter? I'm not sure if I don't have any filter as I haven't checked (don't know how) but by the sound of things, it looks like all xA don't have it and maybe that includes the southern cali xA's.

OK, time to get serious...
Just take all the crap out of the glove box, squeeze in at the back of the opened box and once you get it out, there is the white plastic you saw above. The spot for the filter will be at the top. You can even do this with your dad in the drivers seat because you don't have to worry about him being right that one is in there.

It will cut down on the dust, but it's not a HEPA filter unless you make it one.
And the only air filter included on an xA is the one under the hood.
Good luck, it's really very easy.

The one under the hood is the one for the motor....:wnk:
You can run without the cabin filter, heck, if it was 100% necessary, it would be there from the factory. In fact, to my narrow mind, as soon as you open the door, you let the dust in you will be breathing, so, I put a filter in just to hold a small air freshener. To keep it out of the fan.

Right the air filter 'under the hood' is to keep the air the engine breathes cleaner, and the one 'behind the glove box' is to keep the air YOU breathe cleaner.
I can't speak for any one else's experience, but for me, I've only had to dust the inside of the car about 3 times in nearly two years, and the cabin air filter was loaded with pollen, dust, dead bugs, and a few pine needles in about six months. Let's put it this way: Whatever turned the filter dark grey, plus those obvious things I just mentioned, did NOT make it into the car (or me), and I'm happy about that.
Is it necessary? Nope! Does it actually help? Probably depends on your environment, but for me, yup!
YMMV, IANAL, etc. :D

I did not know that my wife's Rav4 had one from the factory until I bought one for my xB. The one for the xB said it was for the Echo, Rav4 and xB. Sure enough--there was one behind the glove box of my Wife's car---and it was a mess--leafs and junk of all sorts. It is a cheap investment.
