Dealer options, what's worth it
#21
rick, thanks for that insight! That is something we all need to know..
Some things from the factory do indeed deserve a second look, in fact, some of the sponsors here are dealers and offer the same parts as my local rip off bunch for a lot less $$$$ and that is after shipping!
So, the smart thing is to study every mod you want to do, look around, ask around and then decide...

xSTANDxSTRONGx,
I am looking at the same questions as you regarding whether to install options myself. You can print out the installation instructions from some place like trdsparks.com for alot of the OEM options (foglights, security system, cruise control, etc.). By looking at the installation instructions, you can get an idea on whether you would want to do it yourself because you get an idea how difficult it is.
I haven't done anything myself yet, but from looking at the installation instructions, the security system has no real difficult steps, but there are alot of little wiring steps. I would expect you would have to be very careful and it would take quite awhile, but nothing looked extremely hard. The foglight installation looked very easy. It wasn't very many steps. Following the instructions from the cable routing was a little difficult from the pictures in the instructions, but you can just look (and take pictures) of the routing on a car that had the factory install done. I took a bunch of pictures of the engine bay area when I was at an Auto Show. I imagine a dealer would at least let you look around the hood (not sure if they'd like it if you took pictures).
Good luck and let us know how easy the installations were for any options you do install yourself.

Any 5speed drivers out there know if you can start your xA w/o the clutch pedal down? I might be getting a little ahead of myself here but i haven't test driven an xA yet and I'm already thinking of how to mod it.
I do know that i want to get as much power/performance as possible keeping my hwy mpg about 30 (no lower than 27)

it is usually possible to get a clutch bypass on the better security systems...I know the Viper vx791 has one available. This requires more wiring but effectively bypasses the clutch for the purposes of remote start.
