Decision to be made for purchase
I am in the process of deciding on a new car to purchase and have narrowed the field to 3: Scion xA, Toyota Yaris Sedan, and Toyota Yaris Liftback. I have weighed the pros and cons of both, Scion of course holding heavier pros than the Yaris models. However, I have become concerned about the gas mileage of the xA (as opposed to the Yaris 39hwy/32city). I have read inconsistent posts as far as xA mileage, ranging anywhere from 22mpg to 38mpg. I would like some help, since I am leaning heavily toward the xA for my purchase. Any help would be appreciated, being real help, not just revelling in how much one loves his xA for whatever reasons, compelling though it may be, it doesn't particularly compare the pros and cons of xA's vs. Yaris's for me. So! Any input would be much appreciated, I do have a few days before I will make my decisions. After preliminary overviews, research, sit-ins and tours at dealerships, I only lack test driving all 3 models before I buy. Like I said, I am leaning heavily toward the xA but honestly would like to know the drawbacks of owning them. Even more helpful would be owners of both, either together or seperately, or people considering leaving Scions for Yaris.

If you do a fair amount of highway driving and MPG is truely important to you, I would say get the Yaris. It's geared taller than the xA for both the auto and manual transaxles. Taller gearing equals lower RPM at a given speed, which means better fuel economy.
However, if you primarily drive around town, you may like the peppier performance of the lower gearing in the xA. At the lower speeds of in-city driving, there's probably little difference in MPG between the xA and Yaris.
The biggest plus for the xA is it's equipment level.....pwr windows/mirrors/door locks, tilt wheel, ABS, steering wheel radio controls, ect.
On a personal note....if you get the Yaris, get the Liftback. It's a hot little car that looks worlds better than the sedan, IMO.

xA_Factor gives good advice about the gas mileage. The xA is geared much different than the Yaris. The xA should be alot more fun, but won't get as good mileage on the highway, especially if you drive at higher speeds.
I don't agree that the Yaris hatchback is a hot little car. I personally think it is ugly as hell. The sedan looks OK, but the hatchback is horrid.

yeah, i was thinking along those lines. i don't have much interstate driving and i am really really trying to cut back on my speeding problem. looks like the xA is proper, but like i said, test drives will be the final test. i am kinda with you kd on the yaris, my opinion is that the liftback is nice unless you can get the sedan S. IMO, 1)sedan S, 2)liftback, and 3) sedan. that's my ranking. but at any rate, xA is my hope.
fingers crossed.
fingers crossed.
34.5 mpg for the past year with mixed driving. I do not spend much time in stop and go traffic. My xA is 5spd. On pure highway driving at 70-72 I will consistently get 35.5 to 37mpg. I do not baby the car but full throttle is very seldom done.
I looked into all three cars before settling on the xA. Granted my xA is used. I talked to a several dealers and if given the choice between at Yaris or xA, they all recommended the xA. I checked with a mechanic, he said he did not have enough info on the Yaris to make a comparison. My only gripe with my xA is that i only get about 27-29 mpg combined highway and city driving. Otherwise everything else is great. You also know that you can bargain with the Yaris but not the xA.
its pure pricing all the prices will be the same plus every dealer will give you 3 free oil changes. The only deals will be the accessories. They all swear they can't and use the pure pricing as a way of not giving you anything extra. My mechanic bought an xB and the dealer threw in mats, arm rest and a few other accessories.
I test drove both the Yaris hatch and xA a few weeks ago and I must say, the Yaris is LOUD as hell. The xA was much peppier, smoother, and quieter...for about the same price. xA wins hands down but I'm still gonna' wait and see what the xD has to offer.
