Highway speeds in a manual xA?
Hi all,
I am just wodnering what RPM you guys/gal are on when going on the highway.
I have never driven a manual before and still learning.
I seem to be at 60 at 3KRPM and 80 at 4K RPM in 5th gear.
That seems right? The saturn Auto I had before this car was at 3K rpm for 80.
Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I drove back to Orlando earlier this morning. I usually go 80mph, and I get about 30 mpg. I drove 90-100mph this time around and got 26 mpg...what a waste of gas for 30 minutes...
Yeah, I drive like that too. Also, I can feel the mpg lowering when I drive above 80
I've always liked that it revs high. If it didn't, you'd really feel the 108hp. Because the engine revs past 6K, it feels pretty good. That's in city though, not highway - so I'm off topic

at first I was concerned about the high rpm's, but now I appreciate it. . . with only 108hp you need it! Because of the gearing, 5th still pulls decently, and I havn't needed to down shift to climb hills, at least the ones out here (80W towards SF climbing the "grade" to Vallejo). I actually prefer this setup, as it lessens shifts, and the mpg is still great so I can't argue.
All I know is, when I was test driving the xA manual it had plenty of pickup and go while already going 70+. Yes there is more road noise the faster you go but when I drive my stereo is normally cranked and my windows down (put a fork in a/c).
And even when the AC was on it felt like it had plenty of power.
The MAIN objection I have is the visibility when backing changing lanes. I am used to having large windows to look through when executing those moves. I will just have to get used to it. What's great though is how small it is, you can have it sitting right in the middle of the parking spot and not sticking out at all!
I plan on ordering one this week, just waiting on the credit union to answer about my loan.
I'm going to be very happy with this vehicle!

I have to drive to hospitals all over SoCal while I'm in anesthesia school.
I drive the xA at 90-95mph almost daily with no issues. Next month I have to be in San Diego 4 days a week (and I live in Hollywood!).
I don't really like driving that fast all the time, but I'm in the high stress and high mileage mode for a while.
So far, the xA has been GREAT! No worries!!
