How can I tell if my 2005 xA has remote keyless entry?
Last week I bought a 2005 xA and I'm loving it. The dealer I bought it from didn't give me any key fobs, so I bought one on eBay. Using the instructions I found on Scion Life, I tried to get my car into "program mode" but I haven't had any luck after twelve tries. Did the 2005 xA have remote keyless entry standard? The dealer listing said it had RKE, but we all know how inaccurate those listings can me.
So my question is: How can I find out for sure if my car has RKE? If it doesn't, how much would it be to add it?

it doesn't come standered you'd have to add it on your self or have the dealer install it for you

None of the xA's ever came with RKE standard, although I know the xB's did. The only way to have RKE on the xA was to buy the "scion security" option. I'm not sure if its the same for the 05's but on my 06 the security control unit is hidden behind the dash behind the glove box. Just remove the glove box as if you were going to put in a new air filter and you should be able to see it.
I also just purchased an xA, just picked it up last night. I had done a ton of research on the xA and almost all the places that reviewed the car said that it includes keyless door locks. edmunds was one of those that I had relied on.
The car is a 2005 Silver Streak Xa thats mostly stock. When I picked it up it didnt come with the remotes so I assumed that bummer it just doesnt have them. After a ton of research last night after I got home with my, new to me, ride it turns out that the xA's do not have keyless entry stock dispite every review out there. I did found out that you can add it only with the security system option for like $499. Bummer.. no remotes for me.
So I thought.
Today I was showing a buddy the car and I unlocked the hatchback and opened it with the rest of the doors locked. Instantly and alarm sounds blaring across the parking lot. Now.. usually this is a source of great annoyance... but a smile crossed my face. I unlocked the drivers door and the alarm, thankfully, shut off.
Back to research. I chatted with Scion and called the dealer. It looks like I do have the functionality and the dealer would be kind enough to sell me remotes for $50 a pop and a programming charge of $50... so $150 total. Seems kinda steep considering I just spend 10k to get the car that should have had them in it.
So.. back to more research. I found this link that I think most will find very useful to determine if you have the ability to use remote keyfobs and just dont have them.
go to this site
http://www.keylessride.com
and type in your vin number. on mine it couldnt determine if my car came with it or not. So, it prints out a "verification procedure" that allows you to test if it has it or not.
The test involves sticking the key in and out of the ignition at specific intervals, opening and closing the drivers door.. etc. I would put the pdf I saved of it out here if I thought it would help.
I also found the toyota instructions for the install of the security system and the instructions on how to program the remotes for your car, or wipe the remotes that are already programmed for your car.
If somebody has a way of posting them and can share that info I will send the pdfs along.

anubisthorbaal,
Welcome to the Scion family, the xA never came with keyless entry standard. But it looks like someone installed the security system for yours. The xA you bought was used right? If so, what probably happened was that the previous owner had the security system installed, I'll be ya they gave the dealer the remotes during trade in but then the dealership(stealership) doesn't give them to you when they sell the car so they can charge extra for them.
And $50 for programing?!?!? thats the biggest rip off ever,
the instructions for programing are hosted here on SL and if you've ever entered cheat codes on an old nintendo (up, down, left, A, B) then you can program the system yourself.
If I were you, I'd go back to the dealer and demand the remotes that were promised during the sale. Also, trdsparks.com hosts the install manual for the security system, if anyone needs links I can post them.
Oh and another way to tell if you have the security system is to look just left of the steering wheel, there should be a scion security panel close to where the dimmer switch and mirror controls are.
Anyways, hope you and Icelander get free remotes. I'm so sick of these dealerships pulling this kind of crap on customers.

Thanks for the welcome. My Impreza blew up so Scion was my first choice as a replacement. I loved the scooby, but it had its share of problems.
ya.. the dealer stinks. all the info they had on the car was wrong.. gray instead of silver. window tint when there was none. cruise when there was none.
here is my car
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...ce=&cardist=28
hopefully that link works.. kind of long.
but, it wasnt listed with a 6 disc changer or the alarm, so I am happy for what it has instead of what its missing.
They still havent contacted me about the remotes and I am going to assume they stole them as well. I found some on ebay for like $20.. will pursue that if they dont get back to me.
I like your associating it with nintendo cheat codes.. thats exactly what it seems like. Of course, my neighbors are going to think I am having a seizure in the car or something.
Sanchez.. there is something I noticed about your car interior. Your radio lights up really bright. On mine I think only the lcd display for the song lights up.. none of the buttons light up in mine. Is that something you added?

Oh and I don't know if your scion came with these but scions with the security system installed come with a 2 little security stickers for the driver/passenger side windows. I have the ones that came with my security system but I never put them on, they're yours if you want them. Some people say they scare away the baddies.
haha, I just noticed your screen name, would u happen to be a stargate fan?

Sure, I would love a couple of "STAY THE HELL AWAY" stickers. However, I would rather have your remotes

last update on this.
Prior to purchasing my car I did lots of research utilizing online resources such as Edmunds and several other places. They all listed the xA as coming with remote control power door locks is a standard feature. As we have all discovered this is not true. So, I wrote to edmunds.
Here is their response.
"Dear xxxxx,
Thank you for contacting Edmunds.com Customer Support. We will be happy to assist you with your inquiry.
Allow me to apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered due to any errors in our displayed data, we always appreciate when a user is able to bring any discrepancies to our attention. Upon reexamining the original 2003 press kit data it was discovered that you are correct and the remote control for the power door locks is indeed a separate optional feature and not standard. As it turns out an error is also apparent among the standard features for the Scion xA as the option (remote) was incorrectly accounted for as "power door locks". Corrections to the shown standard and optional features are underway and you should see the results following our next site refresh.
I hope this information is helpful to you. If you have additional questions, please be sure to check our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) located through the “Help” link at the bottom of every page.

well I just got my 2nd remote in the mail from ebay. I used a different seller and the fcc number you all provided as being correct.
1 minute to open the package, 1 minute to program it... and a lifetime (well, hopefully at least 10 years) of enjoyment using it.
thanks all for the info on the proper remote.

Quick question.
My car is a scion xA 2006 who also has scion security and the stickers on the window. Like the previous guy mentioned, my car alarm goes off whenever I open the hatch door with all others locked. I have a red light next to light dimmer that says "Scion Security." I bought my car used as well and was just wondering if I could too purchase a remote on ebay and what remote would be good for my car. It's the 3.0 series and yes, the dealer is very confusing....
So with reading this thread, I became very happy. The guy the sold me the car lost the remotes to the car and left it at that. I only have one key for my car have never even seen what a remote for a scion xA looks like. Could you guys give me more info on this? There are two remotes that they say works for my car with two different FCCID and the dealership would not give me that at all. I hear that the gray remotes are the ones to go with instead of the back ones. Is this true? Anyways thanks!
