Default Key works in ignition but not door

Hello all --

Just got a used 2005 Scion xA. The previous owner had one key and a remote. The remote opens the doors, but the key seems to only work in the ignition. I tried both doors and it doesn't turn.

1) How much does it cost to just get a working physical key that will work on the doors and the ignition?

2) I'm afraid that this car has been re-keyed in some way. Should the keys always work in the ignition and door, valets and master?

Thanks, B

uhm, home depot makes copies of car keys for like a dollar or so. and when you put the key into the hole, try pulling it out maybe like a millimeter or 2 before you twist it.. that happens to my bro's car cuz it was a new key. i think its cuz the key hole might be worn out, and it was a new key. thats the only thing i can think of.

OR maybe....it might just have a diff key for the door and the ignition. my old 89 jeep cherokee had to have two separate keys for that. idk what the purpose was.

but if anything, you can always go to the toyota dealership and ask them about it. price might be hefty tho since its the dealers.

First try shooting some graphite lube (or WD-40 or whatever) into the lock. Mine was doing that too with the original keys.

Graphite powder is made for lubing door locks, don't use any liquid lube in any locks, as it tends to gather debis and dust and further gum up the tumblers.

I think the dealer used PB Blaster on mine but then I really haven't been too impressed with them.

Usually if something like that doesnt work either the locks on the car changed (most likely not)
or
Someone before had a problem with the starter and changed the whole thing having to change the whole ignition.
