MPG survey for your Xa? Please give me some input. Thanks!
Question #1.)
I just bought a 2006 Scion XA yesterday. Can anyone tell me the best way to break in the engine please? The dealer told me to drive in the same 50mph for 10 miles then 70mph for another 10 miles on the freeway. However, I like to ask for any pro here? Thank for your help!
Question #2.)
What is the toal miles for the full tank do you get for your Xa? Or what is your MPG?
Please specific the year and current mileage. I am going to put all these information into a chart. Then I will post on this discussion forum later. Thanks everyone!

1. FYI, most modern cars have already been properly broken in prior to being sold so you don't have to worry about what the dealer said. Generally for the first 1000 miles, do not over-rev your car and just drive normally. If you're precautious like me, you can change your oil @ 1k, but that's not necessary. Our engines are built to hit the quarter million mile club, just no one has reached it yet in our fairly new cars.
2. Fuel consumption for my car is around 29-30, mostly city driving. I have a few modifications that accounts for the low MPG and not to mention a foot made of lead =p.
Optimistically expect around 32-33 for a stock vehicle.

They said the recommended way to break your car in is to use variable speeds and just don't put it redline or pull anything crazy.
I went through the first 1000 miles keeping it under 73 as often as I could but with a bunch of different driving conditions from freeway to residental and town and city.
Mileage:29-34 until the winter mix gasoline came in and then I could get no better than 27... I got rid of the car a few months ago.
It was an automatic
Total miles for the full tank by the time the low fuel light came on was about 311. Fill was 10 gallons = 2 gallon reserve

I average 36.7 mpg...(85% city,5%stop and go,2% highway and 8% country/state routes). The only time I saw lower than 30 mpg was when I filled up at exxon,I have always been a Shell man and they are the ones that give me my mileage. And also...I'm bone stock w/24k miles, bought with 2 miles.
Just drive normal and the engine will break in just fine. No full throttle or high revs as previously stated for a little while.
As for mileage I started a spread sheet at about 1000 miles. Over the last 8500 miles or so I have averaged approx 34.5 mpg. The individual fill ups range form 30.9 to 40.4. This tank is so small that unless you fill up at the same pump every time the slightest angle will effect the amount of gas you can put in and the mileage calculation will vary quite a bit. I find this to be very true although the driving patterns remain constant.
The most I have put in is 9.9 and I drove 335 miles. The next tank was 9.6 and was 330 miles.

i drove my xa just like any ordinary car and the first tank i got 33 miles per gallon. the next tank i got 36 miles per gallon. i drive 50/50 highway/city and i probably go only as high as 75.
i drove my xa just like any ordinary car during the break in period and i still do at 800 mileage and the first tank i got 33 miles per gallon. the next tank i got 36 miles per gallon. i drive 50/50 highway/city and i probably go only as high as 75.
On highway trips, my average mileage is around 42mpg. I always drive at 55 with the cruise control set.
As for city, it's much less. Probably around 28 or so. But I normally let my car warm up before driving it.

First tank out of my car, 211 mi. out of 7.46 gallons. 28.3 MPG.
I do 90% around town driving. This tank, I'll see how far I can stretch it. Coming from 11-12 MPG in my previous vehicle, I'm VERY happy.

i heard the way they test mpg for highway mpg is they drive 45 mph on the freakin highway WTF who drives that speed anyways on the highway
anyways
the best city i got was 37mpg and for highway i got 36mpg
but i hardly drive like that anyways...
i've been getting the avg. city of around 32mpg and the lowest i've gotten was around 29mpg

I average 33 mpg using cheveron gas, 29 average using gas from costo. Yes gas does have some inpact on your milage.
Breakin for the first 1000 miles, drive variable speeds. reason, youre breakin in your mechanical devices. no redline as you may shatter something.
another reason is for teh computer to accuratly develop its look up graphs according to your driving style.
its a series of equations based on load, load demand, temperature, combustion, o2 sensor reading,... etc.
estentially all these factors are continually changing, and levels out after it has had a chance to adjust to your driving style.
hope this is helpful and has shed some light.

25mpg
99.9% city driving with big long hills on my daily drive and I have to floor it just to keep with traffic and prevent people from passing me. Also have heavy 17" Motegi rims w/ 45 series tire

I followed the manual's recommended break-in. Pretty easy.
After about 400 miles, I drove 3.5 hrs. each way (on the NYS Thruway, 60-70 mph) to Easter dinner. On the way back, I got gas, used the calculator on my cell phone, and I got 38.38 MPG. Last Thursday, I did another MPG calcualtion after doing lots of 30-45 mph, stop and go driving going to and from work, and came up with 32.4 MPG.
I am doing my best to drive more economically, but it is a pain to remember to brake early, to not jam on it when taking off from a stop, etc. It looks like my efforts are paying off somewhat. I will be curious to see what the milage is like over the next year of driving.
