Default Oil Question?

I will be switching to Mobil 1 soon. I found this on mobil 1's website and found it interesting.

Myth: You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to a synthetic oil like Mobil 1.

Reality:
You can start using Mobil 1® in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:
Mobil 1 is factory fill in:
Acura RDX

Aston Martin

All Bentley Vehicles

Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, Escalade, XLR, XLR-V, SRX and STS and STS-V

Chevrolet Corvette C6 and Z06

Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS

Chrysler 300C SRT-8

Cobalt SS S/C Coupe

Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Charger SRT-8, and Magnum SRT-8

Jeep Cherokee SRT-8

Mercedes-Benz AMG Vehicles

Mercedes SLR

Mitsubishi Evolution

Pontiac Solstice GXP

All Porsche Vehicles

Saturn Ion Red Line and Saturn Sky Red Line

Viper SRT-10

When do most of you change over to full synthetic oil?

Yeah, most people say that because the engine will break in faster. The break in period when using synthetic oil is 2 to 3 times longer.

Interesting. I switched to Mobil 1 awhile back. xA seems to like it alot. Might just be my imagination, but the top end it a little quieter now. I change it every 5k.

I was talking to a buddy of mine about this topic. He is a big vette guy and knows engines pretty well. He said that its best to break the engine in with conventional oil up until about 9,000 miles. He said this makes sure all the values are seeded good. He said that even with the cars that come with Mobil 1 from factory have had conventional run though them prior to coming to the dealership.

Sounds good to me. Its my experience that unless you have a turbo, you may not notice much of a difference with synth oil. I see on another forum many people talk about using 0w synth oil to get a few more mpg.

I knew a guy who had a suzuki swift and the rods would knock when taking off from a dead stop. Before he sold it he went back to regular oil and tada, the rod knock went away.

FYI, the local toyota dealer told me their bottle of oil was mobile synth blend. Thats all I have used so far.

sunnyflorida,
You will be fine to switch to synthetic after 9,000.

I'll be switching to synthetic oil as well, but not necessarily Mobil 1. I'll need to do more research.

Just make sure to change it at reasonible times and if not, change hte filter. When the filter gets full and it takes too much pressure to filter it has a by pass valve. Second as you leave oil in without the filter change, the fine particles continue to flow around the engine as the larger ones are filtered out.

Long story short, change it when its dirty.

mobil1 is actually one of the best synthetic oils you can get on the market.

Ive been forced to change my oil after 2500 miles despite the dealer and extended warranty saying 5000. It looked brown/deep red. couldnt knowingly stand by knowing this.

Not sure if its the filter getting clogged with crap, but the oil seems nice and clear up to the 2 thousand mark.

Ive been using the toyota brand oil and filter. May buy a trd filter this time around and when I hit 15k miles goto synth oil. I do notice a few differences with mobile 1 in my manual tranny.

When I worked in a shop before synth oils, castrol and havoline were the best. My dad had amsoil and an aux filter. He would send the oil in for testing and each time they said it needed changing and charged him 15 bucks to do so. I thought it would of been cheaper to just change it than ask.

I want to try changing filters vs oil as my old diesel car would develop black oil only after a few hundred miles from all the associated sulfur in the system. I thought changing the filters would make it better.

I also drained mine @ 2500 - just because . I read enough about fine metal shavings initially in the oil the first few 1000 miles .... so I spent $5 on 4 new quarts of oil, "just in case".

I'm hearing you on the filter situation, but the OEM Toy. filter is good/excellent quality. The only way I'd go with another filter, is when going to Amsoil- use there filter. I hear the TRD filter has more filtration.. but isn't it like 2-3X the money over oem ?

I might try that to see if it helps my mileage. I've been as high as 36 and as low as 30 and I'd like to keep it on the high end.

Otherwise I'll need to buy a scooter and just keep my gas-hog scion in the driveway.
