Replaced starter yesterday-pretty simple
My Xa has 301,000 miles-all mine. Sadly it wouldn’t start at the high school for my wife last week. Jumping didn’t help, no engine turnover. All indications of a dead starter.
I ordered a starter off Amazon only for it to be packaged without a shred of protective packaging so the electrical connector was broken. I ordered one off Rockauto and it was properly packaged and worked perfectly.
Installation tips:
Undo the positive connection on the battery, let 2 minutes go by to allow the power to dissipate.
Remove the hose from the airbox to the throttle body. Remove the air intake hose to the airbox. This will give you a straight shot to the driver’s side 14 mm bolt. Unclip the connector on top of the starter using a very small regular screwdriver. It’ll flip open, providing access to the 12 mm bolt holding the electrical connection. Squeeze and remove the smaller electrical connection.
Jack up one side of the car high enough to slide under the front. Undo enough 10 mm screws on the plastic bottom skid plates to allow you to see straight up. Look to the driver’s side of the oil filter and you’ll see the starter right in front of you. The remaining 14 mm bolt goes in the opposite direction. The starter will be easily removed at that point by sliding it towards the passenger side.
Install the new starter but don’t tighten the bottom 14 mm bolt all the way without going back up top to start the other 14 mm bolt. Otherwise you will end up crawling back under the car to loosen it to get the top 14 mm bolt started.
Torque the 14 mm to 27 ft lbs, reconnect the 12 mm connector hand tight, plug in the small connector, reconnect the positive battery terminal. Don’t forget to screw the plastic bottom covers back together, place the intake hoses back and you’re done!
Pretty easy repair that’ll save you a couple hundred dollars in labor. Just don’t buy that $80 starter off Amazon. The RockAuto one comes with two years of roadside assistance!
