I thought this break-in period for new cars was a thing of the past, but the salesman said no. He said if you don't break the engine in this way, it will mess up your MPG for the life of the car.
Anyone else ever heard this? Is it true or BS? Did any of you who are getting lower MPG than you expected neglect to break in the engine? Just wondering.
I varied my speed quite a bit for the first 1,000 miles and am getting great MPG. Beginner's luck or proper break-in procedure?

It would be relevant for those with manual transmissions. The differences between auto and manual trannys is pretty low. About 0-2mpg. About right in the middle of the noise in variation from just car to car.
Jeak,
I think most people here followed the breakin procedure to a T. There's been questions regarding it here for a year or two now and most of the people who posted their milage have mentioned they follow it. I know I definately have for 2,000 miles, but I still get crappy milage of 26c/30h, 32best.

New record for the little egg.
Truckee to Portola, Portola to Oroville, Oroville Roseville, Roseville - Truckee, 329 miles. filled up, got around 43mpg... I babied it the entire way and didn't go over 70mph while on I-80

so far, 2006 AT 7500 miles, the best that I have got was 38.9 I average 32 with easy driving and 160 mile trips every weekend, no stop lights.
I think that scion has posted their mpg findings falsely.

i took the first whole-highway trip saturday (146 miles one-way, and about 20 of those were city streets (or country roads if you want to get technical...it was in the middle of nowhere in kentucky)). i filled up right before i left and when i got back i filled up - put 9.114 gallons and got 318.6 miles. got about 35 mpg. my car now has 1785 miles on her. LOL.

35 sounds like an improvement. Accelleration from a stop and pushing wind at high speed use the most fuel, and a long trip at moderate speeds gives you conditions closest to what the EPA uses for its test.
Our little "Indigo Pink Earl" is hitting the EPA numbers, but it's a bit more broken in at ~9000 miles.

Y'all ,still getting around 30mpg?
I have the stock Bridgestone Potenza's on mine with a max.P.S.I. of 44.The manual says,"29"but, I put them around 34-36 P.S.I..Maybe,I'm stretching the envelope but, after 10,000 miles of watching my tire pressure like a hawk ,I c no problems thus so far .I am but 1 man though and I do not have any garauntees on this.Another thing, I found out is that some fuel savers work the others r poppycock and r a waste. The Tornado fuel saver I have found out is the best .I have put this on 3 different cars along with this Scion Xa and found increases with it from hybrids to minivans to Scions of at least 1 to 5mpg.Also they have cool air caps for ur tires that monitor ur air pressure and I have found that they work.Another fuel saver is the platinum fuel saver that increases mileage up to 1-5 mpg .The first hearing I had about this was my friend who has a 96-97 Ford Taurus with both the Tornado and Platinum fuel savers on it and is getting between 29-36 mpg .The platinum fuel saver cost the most out of all fuel savers around 120 bux but,in my blief it is worth it.The Tornado cost from 45 to 70 bux and depends on where u get it.With these devices on ur Scion u can c a improvement on ur gas mileage .For me doing regular driving and the A/C on full blast I'm getting on average 40% cty and 60%hwy about 38-40 mpg.If I "granny" my driving not using the A/C and only going hwy at about 54-59 mph I can get in between 43-48 mpg.I have found out I can get near "hybridville" in these test and have beaten 3 Toyota Prius's in contest of mpg .I have only lost twice but, that's not bad considering these were hybrids and cost on average 8- $10,000 dollars more.3 out of 5 ain't bad , when considering this.I hope I helped y'all ?

About a year ago I ran a test and verified that running more than the recommended pressure didn't make a difference in milage...
I will look into those iridiam spark plugs though!

Tanabe DF210 lowering springs at 500 miles
all the following with air conditioning off
delivering chinese got 37.8mpg first tank, traffic light=all red during break-in period
now 2000 miles constant speed of 55mph of commuting to school gets me 41.6mpg
Denver mile high elevation
with variable valve timing and electronic lift control, the amount if gas you use all depends on how far you press the gas pedal/high engine rpm.
I gas'd it 3/4 way the pedal, shifted at 5,000 rpm for ONE left turn and used twice as much gas going to school as before. So it's all your right foot man.
