Hi guys,
Im in need of some help over something thats been bothering me...I own an '04 scion xb, and i cant seem to get anything past 28 mpg HWY!., 26 mpg on average.... Ive always put this issue aside, but with gas going up, and my new job causing me to carpool, yet drive 210 miles there and back once a week, getting 28 mpg isnt cutting it for me..
for example, on my turn to drive the carpool, i spend a total of about $31...yet when my friend drives his 4.6L V8 Mustang, he pays $36 !....cmon now...
I need to change my fuel filter, ive been too lazy with it, and being @ about 110,000 miles dont help without changing it...oil has been changed at the right times, cleaned air filter...so maybe this is part of the issue...
i also believe this is a power problem, since i find myself @ 4.5-5 k rpm most of the time trying to accelerate, go up hills, or have 3 people in the car....maybe a suggestion to give a bit of UMPH to the car to keep at lower rpms?
Any ideas? suggestions?
HELP!...

Check your intake very very well. Usually seems to be the problem, bad readings from your air flow sensor due to air leaks or a dirty sensor. I can't believe you drive so far to get to work, can't you find something closer?
Well u can start with the basic tuneup.... U said u got the oil and airfilter down which is a good start. Fuel filter will help abit. Make sure you've been changeing your sparkplugs every 30k miles. Seems these engines really need that. A switch to synthetic motor oil will help get you afew more mpgs and if you have a manual tranny switch that out to synthetic.
I see in your sig that you're runnin 18s with Pirelli tires. That's going to play a major part in i n your gas mileage being so low.

Fuel filter and air filter could very easily be the cause. You've got a hefty amount of mileage on the vehicle, so it could be many things. Also from the looks of your mods, the 17's are going to drop your mileage at least 1-2mpg and the speakers are weighing down the car so that will hurt it. Go back to stockers and lose the speakers and I bet you'll be back into the 30's, plus you'll have that extra UMPH again with all that weight shaved off.
definitely the wheels and the wait from the box arent helping. when ever me and my friends do our little weekend trips i take off my 18's and put on my steelies. the first time we did it with my 18's i noticed the difference in the MPG. so the next time i tested it with the steelies and it was back to normal, even with 4 of us in the car plus our crap in the back.

yeah dont have the 18s anymore, my profile was from a loong time ago..got the steelies, not lowered anymore, and just one 12" sub in the back...and as for mods, just an air intake...
I recently purchased my 04 AT xA & I, too am getting far less MPG than my echo. I did expect less mpg, but around 32 in town & 36+ highway was what I expected.
I have 92K miles & I put new NGK platinums gapped at .035 in & still I get 26 in town & 30 highway. I really expected much better. The tires are new in stock size. Air filter good, no codes, doesn't smell gassy or rich. Turns 3000 at highway speeds (normally 70-73 mph). I don't carry additional weight, either. And it's flat here in FL.
Any thoughts appreciated! What about the 2 O2 sensors? They are really pricy, though. But again, no codes.
Thanks in advance!

Ok, there is no fuel filter on an XA or an XB.
The sock on the pump will never have to be changed unless some bad fuel, diesel, or whatever is introduced into the system. If the sock got contaminated it would increase your fuel mileage as it would be restricitng flow, and it would run rough.
spark plugs do not affect fuel mileage as much as you think, the only time it really affects fuel consumption is when you develop a misfire.
Quick things to check that affect fuel consumption, air filter, check the fuel trims on a scan tool to see how the vehicle is being fueled. this can tell you is the MAF is dirty, or if there is a problem elsewhere.
a/f sensor can affect fuel economy but would be an unlikely thing to fail on a Toyota, not saying it does not happen, but it is far and few between.
