A/C issue 06 xB..
I have an 06 xB that i bought wrecked and fixed. now I'm having issues with the A/C. I put a new condenser unit and refilled it. it works OK but when I accelerate or go over like 60 it shuts off. plus when driving around town it fades in and out like from really cold to not as cold.
I bought a set of gauges and hooked them up and it says it is OK, has anyone else had this problem? The only thing i haven't tryid was blocking the back of the grills off because i just have billet grilles in there with no factory ones and maybe it is getting to much air flow?
Please help it's getting hot out.

Maybe an explanation of A/C operation may help clarify whats really going on with your boxes. The A/C compressor is connected to the belt via a Magnetic Clutch. The magnetic clutch is commanded to turn on/off by the A/C Amplifier (basically the A/C ECU). Once you push the A/C button on the dash, the Amplifier takes over, based on heater settings & ambient temperature. The compressor is not designed to run continuous without stopping, it will cycle on/off as needed by the Amplifier. So if you had the car idling, with the A/C on, & watched the clutch on the front of the compressor, you will notice it stop, then start, then stop, & so on. It may run for a minute or 10 seconds, all depends on the conditions.
I would suggest a thermometer be placed in the center vent, digital preferably, like ones used for cooking, basically looks like a spike with the digital readout on top. A well functioning A/C system will operate below 10 degress celsuis after 5 minutes of running, & should maintain that temperature varying only 3 degrees or so.
Under hard acceleration, the A/C compressor clutch will shut off not to rob power from the engine, as well a change in vent temp. of 3 degrees or so is normal. The gauges should be reading around 30psi on the low side & 200psi on the high side, while idling, although ambient temperature will affect the readings slightly higher or lower. If for some reason the magnetic clutch malfunctions or the compressor turns at a speed not related to engine speed, the system will shut off & the A/C button light will blink continously indicating an error.
I would recheck the gauge readings, get a thermometer & check vent readings, watch the A/C button light, then post with results, & lets see if we can get the A/C working properly.

ok i havent tryed that yet but i will as for everything youhave said about how it cycles and stuff i know about but this is shuting down under very little accelaration. my brother in law has an 05 and his dosnt shut down unless it is under WOT? but i will try to get the temp readings today. thanks for your help

some things to look at:
Pressure switch
Expansion valve (probably introduced some dirt into the system when the condensor was damaged, preventing the expansion valve from metering the refigerant correctly)
However, if at all possible you could get the pressure readings when the problem occurs I could help you.
Did you vacuum down the system prior to refilling it with R134a refrigerant? Did you add any oil to the system to make up for the lost oil when the car was wrecked and the freon was vented? If the system was not vacuumed down before the freon was refilled any air in the system will cause high head pressures which will cause the compressor to shut down, and prevent proper cooling. Also if the system was not vacuumed down, there is now plenty of moisture from the air that can cause major corrosion and icing problems. Did you replace the drier when you replaced the condenser? Go to the ackits.com message board if you want help from the pros to get your a/c cold again. I have no affiliation with this company, but they have helped me out on numerous occasions. Autozone rents out a/c gauge sets and vacuum pumps for free if you need them. Good luck with the a/c repair! John
