Default clutch smell???????? Cluth going out?????

For the ones that have had to replace their clutches did you notice a burning smell when it started to go? Tonight when I got home I noticed a burning smell coming from the car. I thought maybe it was a plastic bag that got cought on the exhaust but when I jacked it up nothing. I've been getting a weird feeling in the clutch pedal over the past few weeks and it seems like its grabbing further out on the pedal. Its an 05 with 45k.

Any chance you have a header installed? If so you may be burning the clutch cable.

If not then it sounds like your clutch is going.

1. smell
2. pedal feels different over last few weeks
3. grabbing further out

sounds like it's time for a clutch. are you experiencing any slippage? like, if you were going from 1st to 2nd in a way that would normally chirp the tires, do you see the rpms fly up, with no chirp?

I haven't noticed the rpms flying up. I have been watching for that over the last few weeks. Does the clutch on the XB just give out or will I be able to drive it if I'm easy on it? When the clutch died on my old mustang 5.0 it just died and that was it.

Also no header, she's stock

from what it sounds you should be able to drive it for a little while at least.

start saving up. the clutch job is around 1400. i've done everything under a hood, and a clutch on a transversally mounted engine is something that i will refuse to do. ok, that's not true. i did my girlfriend's about two months ago, and believe me, 1400 would have been worth every penny. i personally would avoid doing a 'driveway clutch' at all cost.

I thought about doing it also but like you front wheel drive units are just a royal pain.

It should be more like $900. The dealer wanted $1350 for installing a TRD clutch but a local perfromance shop near me will do it for $550 if I supply the parts. A clutch Master kits is about $350.

transaxle isn't so bad if you have the right tools for the job. driveway may not be the best but yes it is doable might take most of a day or two but could be done.
