Default Engine oil question

Hi guys,
I've been registered for a while but I think this is my first post.
Today I was looking at an 06 to buy. I took the oil cap off the valve cover to look down inside to look for sludge etc. Usually when you look into an engine like that you see the aluminum head and/or valve train components and get a good idea how clean things are inside the motor. Today when I did this I saw standing oil as if you were looking into a tank of oil. Usually oil drains quickly back to the sump and exposed things under the valve cover. Does the xb have baffles or something that holds oil up there? This may seem dumb but It suprized me and made me wonder if there was a problem. Thanks, Wal
