i just got my xb a couple of weeks ago but i got it in automatic. i recently saw all the things that you guys are doing to your xb's like turbos, superchargers, etc. but you all have it in standard. now i want to know if i did those kinds of things to my automatic would it even be close to being as fast as your standards?

Most of the people that complain about autos complain about going up hills. This suggests that they just can not get in the a proper gear to coax the box up the hill. As far as top speed it should not matter. As far as 0-60--you can not get the auto to beat an equivilant manual.

Default auto xb

I also have any auto. xb. Between the different overdrive ratio in the trans., and the higher ratio final drive gear, the automatics are at a dissadvantage. But we also cruise at less rpms than a manual trans. Someone had put together a chart showing what the trans., and final drive ratios where. You also have to be concerned about the overall strength of our transmissions when using a turbo or supercharger. Automatics have always been at a dissadvantage. They can hold up for a while, but how long remains to be documented.

I think manuals have an advantage over auto's because YOU control the shifting and can rev higher in gears while auto's shift when they reach their calibrated gear ratios and don't rev any higher.

Other than that, I don't beleive there are any other dissadvantages. I don't race so I could be wrong but I have seen many racers who race auto's so I'm sure it isn't too bad that you got an automatic.

I never tried to go that fast in my auto, but I never had much problem cruising up hill either.
Just think, you will never miss a shift

I drove both an automatic and a manual before purchasing and although I think driving a manual can be fun I really prefer an automatic cause im lazy. I also didn't like the higher RPM associated with the manual transmission. Lastly, I think the auto has lots of pep when you punch the gas. No complaints here!

The pros and cons of automatics vs. manuals as I know them:

Manual:
1. Can rev the engine and then control the launch from a stop
2. Can control the RPMs for a given situation
3. Lighter than the auto
4. In the XB the gearing is lower so it is peppier

Auto:
1. It can shift faster than most people can shift a manual
2. It's heavier than the manual
3. In the XB the gearing is higher so it's not as quick but should do well at higher speeds.

If you decide to get a turbo or supercharger, you will still get a major benefit but it will have different advantages than a manual. Many years ago I knew two brothers that both had Mustangs. One had a manual and the other had an automatic. When they raced from a dead stop the manual won every time because the advantage from the launch was too much for the auto to overcome. Whenever they raced from about 20 or 30 the auto always won because the advantage of the launch was gone for the manual and the auto shifted faster.
