Default Low coolant light

I have a 2006 xA and for several minutes after initial start up the low coolant light stays on and won't allow the car to shift into higher gear. I have made sure it is full of coolant and the light still comes on. Is the sensor or thermostat bad? Any advice wouldbe greatly appreciated. I just bought this car three days ago so know very little about them.

This is normal , it is the temp light not a low coolant light. It is just telling you she isn't up to normal operating temp yet. And not shifting is normal as well.

Turns off at 138 degrees FYI! Didn't know it affected the auto shifting into top gear though. I have a xb 5 speed ...

Many automatics won't go into top gear when in their warm-up mode. Helps to get the engine up to temperature faster, which is key because emissions are significantly higher when cold.
