Default same charcoal filter problem, different girl....

Hey. Forgive me if this answer is already posted somewhere, but I couldn't find it.....
I have a 2006 XB with the CEL, VSC, and TRAC OFF lights on. I have had the dealership run the code and they told me it's the charcoal canister and the valve that goes to it. Seems to be a pretty common problem on these things..... Anyway, dealer wants $700 to fix it. I know I can do it myself, and I can't afford $700 to make a light go off... I have found a salvage XB to get the part from (free so why not see if it's good, right?). But Chilton's doesnt make an XB book, at least not yet. So I need to see if someone can tell me where the canister and valve are located. Any help????

Look under your back bumper, you will see a black rectangular box bolted to the underside of the trunk floor about in the center, that is the charcoal canister, the valve should either be attached to it, or nearby.

Thanks IM! Got the canister replaced 175 miles ago, reset the CEL, and all is good-gas mileage seems better (which is strange to me), so I guess it's even better than I bargained for. I'm a minitrucker by trade, so the box is a new thing for me, good to know when I come up on a problem you guys are here to help me out. Thanks again!

Use the 2004 manual for all the mechanical stuff, and for the electrical, unless you have the audio controls on the steering wheel, then use the 2006.5 wiring manual...

Enjoy!

Right on. So the wiring is the same for the 04 and the 06 except for the steering wheel controls?

Mechanical is 99.9% identical 2004 through 2006.5, no changes in electrical 2004 through early 2006. Late 2006 (called 2006.5 by most people) there were some changes in electrical and a few minor changes in mechanical.

Easiest way to tell the difference in the two is if there are no audio controls on the steering it is the 2004-2006 type, if it has steering wheel audio controls it is a 2006.5 and the wiring harnesses are different in several areas (use the 2006 electrical manual).

Hope that makes sense. If not, folks here are happy to help out.

Glad I could help. I'm not surprised your gas mileage went up, if the valves for the canister are malfunctioning it can cause gasoline to fill the canister and/or not allow gas vapor to get back to the fuel tank. Either of these means you're just losing that gas, rather than getting it back to your fuel tank and having a chance to use it.
