did you install a short shifter by any chance ?

it sounds like your shifter cable may have come loose , take out the center consol and check , this is a common problem if you didn't have the cables installed with a little force.

they are hard to install , I used to do it when I built toyotas.
sometimes they just pop off if not really smacked when installed . seeing that a little guy probably did it in Japan, trying to be careful, maybe he didn't get it just right. is only plastic in plastic

hey! i got a question! I hit a speed bump really hard, 30+ mph. I now get a rattle only in 1st gear, i have a MT. When i depress the clutch, when i get to the "friction" zone, it rattles and you can feel it on your foot on the clutch. It feels and sounds like metal on metal. And it sounds like it's coming from around the drivers side tire. Does anyone know what this could be? is it serious? I was driving home today, and it rattled and it looked like 1st gear was stuck and then it just popped into gear. please help!!

could be your shift linkage.... pull apart the center console... and pop the shift linkage cables back into the guide on the base of the shifter....

this happened to me, because i installed a custom short throw shifter.. and the shifts were so short.. it actually lifted the cable out of its guide.... could also be from hard shifting, racing... etc... let me know if that helps

I agree with the linkage suggestion. Basically when you rock the shift stick left to right it moves the shifting thingie on the tranny in and out, when you shift it from 1,3,5 to 2,4,r it moves that thingie left and right to put it in a gear.

to the op . it coulb be thelinkage inside the car or where the linkage connects to the transmission under the hood. check both.

hitting a speed bump at 30mph in a stock CAR is ALL BAD.

you probably broke something. could be any large number of things . as well as possibly bending part of the front subframe , blowing an engine mount , blowing a transmission mount and the list goes on for days.

i think i solved the problem, but i still feel it in my clutch...Part of my intake was hitting something, so i changed it out. But it still makes that rattle, only sometimes tho.
