How much power will the stock manual transmission and clutch support?


This probably pretty far fetched, but does anyone think there might be a remote chance of fitting the MR2's sequential transmission?

 

i really don't believe our trannies can hold too much power. i think would def. need to upgrade. you would also want a lsd wouldn't you. no questions about it i would

 

the stock clutch is pretty weak....upgrade the clutch if your going to boost/nos....for the stock motor with bolt on's its fine...
the tranny isnt what u should really worry about...its the drive lines....i broke those first in my civic....
dont honestly think u could get enough reliable power out of the motor to break the tranny....unless u dont know how to shift.....then u could have problems
what breaks tranny's and drivelines.....is torque off the line....learn to accelerate easier

 

mmm...I will ask the tranny gurus at my shop and see what they say. :? Maybe there are similarities.

 

Awesome. I'm more of a motorcycle guru, so I favor sequential tranmissions. They have a much better feel to me. It's too bad they aren't in more cars...

Yeah, I already understand transmissions for the most part, I just prefer a sequential transmission over a synchromesh type transmission.


There gear change just feels more positive to me and they can shave seconds off of lap times.

 

My stock clutch doesn't feel like it will last very long, even without major power upgrades. Definitely something you want to replace if you're modding your car.

ok, from what I have found about the MR2 and our trannys. The guys think it may actually fit! But there may be mounting problems around the tranny, but the bell housing bolts up. Now the input shaft would have to be measured though before any tranny is installed and then the distance between the clutch would have to be measured as well.

But the tranny guys here beleive the easiest way would be just to rip apart our trannys and replace the gears them selves, with better ones for lower rpms.

Maybe you can ask your tranny guys if there are better tunes for the MR2 tranny? I've heard the the sequential manual shifts painfully slow (controlled by the computer).

 

I hate to say it but I wouldn't give two ____s and a nickle for the sequential manual trans. I have rebuilt two when they first came out and there is much more involved than just the trans. There is a hydraulic power unit and accumulator that has to fit and an ECU that is not stand-alone. The performance is not anywhere near a normal manual trans and would be dissapointing at best. If you could make an ecu that would actually work you would be my new hero and you should be working somewhere else.Good luck!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~scott

Good point Scott. The more I read up on Toyota's sequential manual, the more it sounds like a poor idea. Why couldn't they built good ol' fashioned sequential manual? There's no need to bring hydraulics and circuits into this...

 

we just need something with taller gears. what about the celicas?? or are they the same?

 

I read somewhere that the Scion used the Celica transmission, I could be wrong and I have no idea where i read it.

 

i read that too. maybe i should have asked more of a "is the celica tranny different?"

 

Thats what I've been trying to tell everyone, but not taller gears. Gears with less teeth, that way there is less distance for lower RPMS.

 

I bet the scion is capable of 16s or faster in stock form if we could space out the gearing. maybe some custom internals like mentioned before. I'd be up for it if I had my xb right now.

 

I am going to do that as soon as the warranty expires.
