i just don't see a point in changing the oil too early.
ive just now hit 3k on my oil change and the oil is still a realy good color. it is a little darker then new but its not even close to needing changed.

ill post pic when i get a chance

FYI - color gives no indication of oil additive depletion. Only a UOA can do that.

Short trips, city driving and even driving habits are bigger factors than mileage when it comes to OCI's.

Used Oil Analysis. Oil analysis is a quick, nondestructive way to gauge the health of an engine by looking at whats in the oil including:
-Spectral exam
-Insolubles test
-Viscosity test
-Flash Point test

Synthetic or dino, mobil or shell, 5w-X or 10w-x...it does not matter. It is your engine itself, how you drive your car, fuel dilution ration, quality of air filtration, ambient temps and soooooooooooooo many other factors that determines oil life. Thats why it is impossible to say "this" is the best oil.

I use Castrol GTX 5W-20 and change it every 5K in my xA. I have a Ford Explorer with 230K on it and it's had nothing but 10W-30 Havoline dino oil since the first change. It uses about 3/4 of quart between 5K mile oil changes. I change my own oil.

They are both the same weight oil at operating temp. The 5 is thinner than the 10 at start-up and cold temps.

5w or even a 0w would be the best choice IMO.

Is there any truth to people who say that once you start using Synthetic oils you cannot go back to standard oil? I seriously doubt this is true. I've used Synthetic oil on my 3000GT since 10,000 miles and never plan to stop using full synthetic.

I'm planning on switching to Mobil 1 full synthetic on my xA, but it isn't out of the question that I would someday have a dealership change my oil for convenience, but they use some sort of Castrol synthetic blend.

I am doing th b's second oil change this weekend. Change it every 4000. Because it is the same price to change the pennys oil in synthetic as it was to change my old trucks oil.
I was doing some research and learned that AMSoil and redline are 2 of the only fully synthetic oils out there.
companies are aloud to call there product full synth. if it has over a certain % being synth. Like royal purple, castrol syntec...

Just what I found out the other day
