Running on 86k now. About time to change the timing belt? Anything else need to be done on the way?

There's no belt on the Gen 1 xB; it's a chain. At 90K, change the plugs, the oil/filter, the transmission oil (manual), and air filter. Check bolts, brakes, coolant, boots, steering, fuel systems.

Just a thought but have you replaced the serpentine belt yet? Thats done at about 90k. You can get a part at the dealer and do it yourself. I have heard good and bad things about getting a generic part.

I wouldn't wait for the magical 90k to change belts. The serpentine belt (a.k.a alternator belt, a.k.a. the belt that wraps around the alternator, water pump, a/c and crank pulleys), should be checked whenever you change oil, or even more frequently. Make sure it is well tensioned, but also make sure the ribs are not cracked. Any signs of wear like that, get it replaced, pronto. They're about $20 bucks at O'Reilly's. A snapped belt is no bueno. Keep a spare in your car, along with a 14mm and 10mm ratcheting wrench. It's all the tools you'll need to replace one with.

i have access to legit shop manuals being a student at my local college and had that same question. my answer up to 200+k, never. it is a chain, on an economy engine, in a lightweight car, so really there is very little strain put on the chain its self as far as power. if you go FI or track your car frequently keeping it at higher rpm's often, then ide say 150k on the safe side, just IMO.
