Default eBay Turbo Kits...

Soooooooooooooooooooo...

Whats to stop someone from buying something like this...

Ebay Turbo Kit

then buying a turbo manifold, and having a muffler shop custom bend some exhaust and IC piping if needed. You could probably do the whole thing on the cheap for $1200 or so and run low boost on stock fuel system.

Then later if you wanted some more power you could add injectors and a fuel/boost controller and get it dyno tuned.

Or am I missing something?

everything is this kit is knock-off, wanna-be, boot-leg crap. Remember when it comes down to car tuning you got three choices:

1.) Reliability
2.) Power/Speed
3.) Cheap

The catch is you can only choose 2 of the above mentioned. So if you decide to get that crappy assy $hitty kit then you will have speed for cheap, but your reliability will be in the GUTTER!!! I have an expensive kit and my reliability is in the GUTTER!!! I wouldn't even look at those kits twice.

Whats funny, is most of you guys thinking its prudent to spend $3500 on a turbo kit for a car that costs $14,500.

I've owned fast cars. This car is a crapbox that I commute in that im trying to make less boring. Either way, i'd put the reliability of cheap eBay components up against Greddy or HKS or ZPI (lol) any day.

At the end of the day, the thing thatll make a turbo'd xb reliable is getting the car tuned on a dyno instead of what most people do which is trust online retailers to ship them a piggyback system thatll handle the fuel system for them.

You could get your car tuned on a dyno until it runs better than a stock Supra, but when it comes to turbocharging a NA car the most important thing to remember is that reliablity is only going to be as good as the reliability of ALL the parts included in the build, including the engine itself.

- The stock injectors will not handle a turbo very well, at all.
- Our engines do not like excessive boost with the flimsy stock internals
- Usually when you want to turbo charge on of our cars expect to spend at least 3500 when your done.

I have a GReddy turbo kit in my car, and it was tuned properly by a professional dyno tuner, and the weakest link in this case was the engine. I bent a rod after only 2500 miles of turbo fun.

If your going to do it, do it right the first time. It makes life so much easier.

9psi of boost. So yes, that was in part my fault. :D

But we have cases right here on SL of engines failing that weren't even F/I setups.

Our engines are pretty durable. I got about 2500 miles of fun out of the stock internals at 9psi, but, there are people that have gone substantially longer with similar set-ups.

New rods are good.

They should be more than sufficient to handle this:

I got the turbo kit used from a former show car (no racing) for $1200, picked up the intercooler for $500, and had the pipes done for $130. Why get sketchy stuff when you can find such good deals on this and other Scion forums?

^^^^^ Because some people are impatient and dont know how to get the best deals. You gotta be dedicated to get the best deal, if not, you will most likely get the shaft
