Default Ram Air, Stock Box

I am thinking of Running my own custom Ram air into the air intake box, any pictures of where to cut or attach the air hose to?

It looks like a great idea.

I've been thinking of a ram-air setup for my Injen shortram, using a functional hood scoop...

Default Air intake

I would think that would work well, but the ducting would be off center, or really in depth.

With my issue I was thinking of running ducting from the two fog light inlets as I don't have factory fog lights, plus two already built holes so no need for cutting my hood, plus I want a carbon fiber hood that looks stock. Thus CXLing the intake hood option for me. The fog light option isn't a biggy as I can always get headlights or the grill option with fog lights (this option I could get carbon fiber.).

I used to have a vw 03 Jetta 1.8t and I've had plenty of time to experiment and fabricate on cars before. I really need to know the diagram for the airbox on my xb so I can figure out what can go and what can't.

I cut my fog covers and glued factory grill pieces behind the fog cover. So as to feed colder air into the hole with my Injen Short Ram Intake. Functionality was A+, the look factor was not the best. I have seen others do a better job on the look of theirs. But here are some pics of mine.

To bad you don't drive a BCP or I would send you mine, since I have no use for them any more.

Default Fog light grills...

What's the ducting look like under that? I was think just taking the cover off completely and running dryer hoses to a 3 way fitting and attaching that to my Air box for now.

It's just in open hole inside, that then leads to another hole into the engine bay. I wanted to do something very simulair to what you are thinking of doing, but it just never panned out for me.

Really guys, if you want power, keep the intake piping to a minimum. This is a car that we built this year. It was featured in last months Honda Tuning magazine.

I have dynoed many cars since 1998 and I have never seen a cold air ram intake make more power than a short ram. Intake manufacturers want you to buy their cold air intakes because they make money. In fact the temp difference is less of a difference than the breathability the engine has with a short vs cold air/ram type. Our engines suck in air faster than the air you are forcing into the car by driving lets say 60mph? Dont believe me? Try the E-Ram. I had a customer here that had installed the ERam which gives 1psi of boost. I dynoed it back to back to back with not even a 1hp gain at all. Guys stop making companies rich and read some good books on modern fuel injected cars. A. Graham Bell has written some very good ones.

Another thing you guys should know is that the Toyota engineers are not idiots. The engine bay is designed like that for a reason. Take for example the two side fins near the radiator edges. Those are to help direct air flow and increase air pressure where it needs it most. When you start hacking bumpers, inserting tubes, not only are you dropping the pressure, you could actually cause turbulance of air flow in the engine bay.

I'm not familiar with E-Ram but I do know that you can't tell the difference between a ram air system and not on a dyno because you don't get the effect of the air pressure from the car moving. There are a lot of ram air kits and cars that come with ram air packages as well as motorcycles. It must help somehow. There have been drag cars using scoops for years and years to get more air in. Those are all types of ram air. Look at the huge scoops on all the NHRA and IHRA cars and bikes. They all have forward facing scoops. The air in front of the car is no cooler than the rear so they are either using the air pressure from moving forward and/or just avoiding the problems with turbulence sucking air in from other angles.

I'm confused... rollhard (or whoever wants to give their 2 cents):

a) What about 80-90 mph worth of air pressure? Any difference?

b) I always read that the decision between a short ram and a CAI "depends on the car and the specific application." Sooo... what would you say is the best for the xB?

c) Brand: How important is it? Would the brand also depend on the car or do they typically use the same "route?"

Default ram air, cold air -- two cents

General principles: Cold air is more dense than warm air and makes more horsepower, all things being equal. Well established fact. Ask anyone who tunes a racecar.

Ram effect works at high speeds. But, you have to be going pretty fast for it to make a significant difference. It won't make much difference for a street driven xB. A positive side effect is most ram air setups also pick up colder air. So we're back to cold air.

I think an good ram air/cold air unit could be developed. We'll just have to wait and see if the ideas swirling around in my head turn into something solid.

All the best,

Hey, I would love to put your modified foglight covers to good use. Can I have them if they are not already spoken for?

Thanks,
WW
