As he left the car again to stop the pump, a static electrical charge developed, and BOOM! There went the explosion. He lived, but his car was destroyed.

You know, you ____ed me off there. How dare you call what I saw with my own eyes a BS story?
You are so wrong, it's funny. Tell you what. Explain why the gas stations around here warn about not using cell phones while filling up.
STATIC electricity can start a fire. Plain and simple.
So, go on, smoke around gas fumes. Throw your butts in a can of gas. I'll laugh my ___ off while you burn.
Forward, you live in the detroit area and never saw a market grounding spot on a gas pump? Plain and simple...Cold climate + cloth seats + fumes exiting filler neck = potential problem. Many gas stations have cameras installed to catch "drive offs". These cameras have caught, at least 3 static caused fires that I have seen. I think that it is very uncommon but it has happened. My car seems to generate quite a bit of static which is usually discharged while I exit the car, as I put my hand on the sill, and I can tell you this....I certainly would not want to test it out with an open filler neck and a empty tank.
As for a solution to the problem??? A can of Static Gaurd from your local grocery store??? Maybe

im sorry but i laughed so hard when i saw this post.
they have anti-static electricity bracelets i think you can wear. or prepare for the static shock just as 25,000,000+ americans get in and out of their vehicles.
